In Naberezhnye Chelny, a doctor who did not notice a skull fracture in a patient was charged with causing death by negligence

In Tatarstan, neurosurgeon Rustam Sabirov has been charged with causing death by negligence due to improper performance of professional duties” (Part 2 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code), the human rights group “Accent”, which provides legal support to the mother of a deceased patient, reported to Mediazona.

On July 15, 2013, a resident of Avtograd was taken by ambulance to the Naberezhnye Chelny hospital with an accompanying diagnosis of “closed craniocerebral injury, concussion, subcutaneous hematoma of the occipital region, alcohol intoxication.” When viewing the radiograph, the neurosurgeon Sabirov did not notice a skull fracture in the 49-year-old patient and did not send the patient’s blood for a chemical-toxicological study to establish the possible degree of intoxication and identify the toxic agent. Sabirov unreasonably diagnosed alcohol intoxication and contusion of the soft tissues of the head.

“The neurosurgeon then continued to act negligently and decided to transfer the patient to another hospital. On the same day, the man left the medical facility on his own. On the morning of the next day, the victim’s health condition deteriorated sharply, and he was again taken by ambulance to the emergency hospital. The patient underwent surgery to remove an intracerebral hematoma of the frontal lobe,” the human rights group said in a statement. On July 24, the man died in the intensive care unit of the hospital from a closed head injury, complicated by cerebral edema.
