The Verkhovna Rada demanded that the renaming of Dnepropetrovsk be cancelled. The corresponding resolution was submitted to the Rada by deputies from the “Opposition Bloc” Alexander Vilkul and Dmitry Kolesnikov. The draft document is posted on the official website of the parliament.

Earlier on May 19, the Verkhovna Rada renamed the regional center of Dnepropetrovsk to Dnepr as part of the decommunization law. 247 parliamentarians voted for the renaming. Also during the parliament meeting, a decision was made to rename the city of Dneprodzerzhinsk to Kamenskoye and five other settlements.

In December 2015, the Dnepropetrovsk City Council decided to leave the city with its current name and consider it named after St. Peter. Local deputies appealed to the Verkhovna Rada with a request to preserve its name for Dnepropetrovsk.

In April last year, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a package of laws on decommunization . According to it, the symbols of communism, coats of arms and flags of the USSR and union republics are prohibited. Party symbols were also banned. The law required the dismantling of monuments to Communist Party figures and changing geographical names within six months.

Guided by this law, in March 2016, in the village of Kaliny in the Transcarpathian region, the head of the region renamed Lenin Street to Lennon Street . According to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, completing decommunization in Ukraine is “a matter of national security.” At the same time, the president warned against returning “imperial names” and “names of executioners” to the map of Ukraine. “I will not allow the map of Ukraine to be sullied with Novorossiysk toponyms!” - concluded the President of Ukraine.
