The street will receive the name of the dissident during decommunization

In the Ukrainian city of Lutsk, a street will appear in honor of the Russian opposition and dissident Valeria Novodvorskaya. A street named after the Soviet writer Vanda Vasilevskaya will be renamed the administrative center of the Volyn region, the BBC reports.

The name of the street will change within the framework of the law on decommunization, according to which Soviet symbols and toponymy falls under the ban, the communist regime is condemned and secrecy is removed from the KGB archives. The law was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada in April 2015.

Since then, the name has been replaced by many cities and streets that were names of Soviet figures. Last week, within the same law, Dnepropetrovsk was renamed the Dnieper. Valeria Street Novodvorskaya will be the first Ukrainian toponym to be named after the Russian oppositionist.

Valeria Novodvorskaya during the Soviet Union was a dissident and political prisoner. During the years of perestroika, she headed the party "Democratic Union". Novodvorskaya performed with a harsh criticism of Vladimir Putin and the Russian authorities. She died on July 12, 2014 at the age of 64.
