Joseph Bakstein was one of the initiator of the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Moscow, officially established by the Ministry of Culture in 2003, in 2005 he was a curator-coordinator of the 1st Moscow Biennale.

Invited curators work on the main project of Moscow Biennale. The main project of the 6th Moscow Biennale “How to live together? A look from the city center in the very center of the island of Eurasia ”, which was supervised by the director of the Muhka Museum of Contemporary Art (Antwerp) Bart de Bar and the director of Kunsthalle (Vienna) Nikolaus Shafhausen, was represented in the Central Pavilion in the autumn of 2015.

In total, 80 projects of Russian and foreign artists were shown at the 40 venues of the 6th Moscow Biennale.
