The ECHR ordered Russia to pay six thousand euros to the Novocherkassk editor

On May 31, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Russia is obliged to pay Elena Nadtok, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Chastnaya Lavochka, about six thousand euros.

We are talking about compensation in the case of insulting the former mayor of Novocherkassk, Anatoly Volkov. A Russian court found a violation of the law in a 2004 publication in the Vecherniy Novocherkassk newspaper (then headed by Nadtoka), in which there is a phrase about some thieving people in Altai who hold high positions, with a hint of Volkov. Nadtoka was sentenced to a fine of 50,000 rubles.

The ECtHR saw in the trial of the editor-in-chief a violation of Article 10 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms - “Freedom of Expression”. As compensation for non-material damage, the Russian authorities owe Nadtok four thousand euros, and 1992 euros - for legal costs.
