The head of Brazil's Ministry of Transparency, Supervision and Control, Fabiano Silveira, submitted his resignation on Monday, May 30. The reason for the petition was the scandal that erupted after the publication of his recording in which he gives advice on how to hide from an expanding corruption investigation, reports Reuters .

The recording of the conversation between Silveira and the head of the Senate, Renan Calheiros, was made by one of the former oil industry executives as part of a plea deal. A similar audio recording published in the media has already led to the resignation of Planning Minister Romero Huque. According to the recording, Hook allegedly tried to stall an investigation into corruption at state oil company Petrobras by “sacrificing” the position of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.

In a recording broadcast late on Sunday by Globo TV, Silveira criticizes prosecutors' investigation into corruption at Petrobras. In a conversation with the head of the Senate, he gives Caleirus advice on how best to protect himself from investigation.

The former head of Transpetro (the transport division of Petrobras), Sergio Machado, who is under investigation, recorded conversations with various politicians as part of a deal with prosecutors. According to the recording aired on Globo, Silveira spoke several times with prosecutors in the Petrobras case, trying to find out what information prosecutors had about Caleiros.

Following the release of the recording, officials from the Ministry of Transparency, Oversight and Control held a demonstration outside the presidential palace demanding Silveira's resignation.

On May 12, the Brazilian Senate voted by a majority of votes (55 to 22) to remove President Dilma Rousseff from power. Her powers have been suspended for six months. Vice President Michel Temer replaces Rousseff as head of state.

Rousseff, before assuming the presidency, in 2003–2010, headed the board of directors of the state-owned oil company Petrobras. In 2014, a number of criminal cases were opened in Brazil against the company’s top management - according to investigators, Petrobras management received at least $3.8 billion through bribes and kickbacks.
