Announced Long list of the Enlightener Prize

Today, June 7, the names of the nominees of the Prize Dmitry Zimin “Enlightener-2016” for the best popular science book in Russian became known.

According to the Enlightener Prize website , more than 160 applications were submitted to the competition this season, of which 25 books were included in the long list.

Books of the popular science genre on any subjects originally written in Russian and in primary sale, regardless of the date of the publication, were accepted for the competition. The manuscripts that were in the process of publication at the stage of publishers were accepted for consideration. Scientific monographs, school and university textbooks and manuals, magazines, biographies and memoirs were not accepted for the competition.

The selection of the nominees was carried out by the co -chairs of the Organizing Committee of the award: historian, journalist, publicist and writer Alexander Arkhangelsky and literary critic, culturalist, TV presenter, head of the institute of the book Alexander Gavrilov with the participation of the curator of “Book Projects Dmitry Zimin” Valentin Korievsky.

“An incredibly dense list of humanities and rarely diverse in natural-this is what I would like and, finally, can be discussed in society and the press,” commented the co-chair of the Organizing Committee of the Prize Alexander Gavrilov.

The short list will be announced in early October 2016. The selection of books on the short list will be made by the members of the jury of the prize:

• Roman Timenchik, chairman of the jury, literary critic, professor of Jewish University in Jerusalem;
• Dmitry Bayuk, science historian, deputy editor -in -chief of the magazine "Questions of the history of natural science and technology";
• Evgeny Bunimovich, poet, mathematician, Commissioner for Child Rights in Moscow, Honored Teacher of Russia;
• Vladimir Plungyan, linguist, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Deputy Director of the Institute of Russian Language named after V.V. Vinogradova RAS, professor of Moscow State University;
• Konstantin Severinov, biologist, professor of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, professor of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, professor at the University of Ratgers (USA);
• Alexey Yurchak, anthropologist, professor of the University of California in Berkeley (USA);
• The editors-components of the book “Mathematical Component” (Nikolai Andreev, Sergey Konovalov, Nikita Panyunin; representative at the jury-Sergey Konovalov);
• Dmitry Zimin is the founder of the Enlightener Award (with an advisory vote).

The award ceremony will be held on November 17 . Prize winners in the “humanitarian sciences” and “natural and accurate sciences” will receive a monetary reward of 700 thousand rubles, finalists will receive 100 thousand rubles each. Publishers of the books of laureates will be awarded with a cash certificate with a dignity of 130 thousand rubles to promote books in the market.

On the eve of the awarding of the laureates, the Enlightener Award festival will be held for all fans of science, popular science literature and just curious people.

Dmitry Zimin's prize “Enlightener” for the best popular science book in Russian was established in 2008. The purpose of the award is to attract the attention of readers to the educational genre, encourage authors and create prerequisites for expanding the educational literature market in Russia.
