The degree of Russia's involvement in the Donbass rebellion from the very beginning was not just huge, but decisive. Nevertheless, to consider them exclusively as collaborators, as proteges and puppets of interventionists, is a simplification. Such simplifications are inevitable in the midst of hostilities. But if you hold on to them all the time, you can easily make a mistake in political landmarks.

It is possible to argue whether the Donbass rebellion is a civil war with elements of foreign intervention or foreign intervention with elements of the Civil War. But one cannot deny the presence of both of the other elements. Unfortunately, the civil war can really be kindled from the outside. Almost out of the blue. If you use sufficiently powerful resources and not limit yourself in the means. The question is what to do with it when, thanks to this external intervention, it has already become a fact.

I have repeatedly claimed that while the Donbass rebels feel Putin tank armades behind their backs, it will not work to agree with them. Any attempt to give them a finger will turn around their attempt to grab the whole hand. After all, their own political aspirations for the most part coincide with the imperial aspirations of the Kremlin. Today, Nadezhda Savchenko offers them to agree directly, without the participation of Moscow. In fact, she invites them to break off the connection with the Kremlin and exclude the Kremlin from the political equation. Savchenko is absolutely accurate politically. In a military person is accurate. Only if the Kremlin is thrown out of the political equation, can we achieve a political settlement in the Donbass.

Is it possible in principle? In any case, it will be incredibly difficult. Not all rebels are familiar with the theories of the philosopher Dugin or were in the Russian Federation. However, the strongest smell of a fascist dog is spreading from them. There are something in the fighters for the “Russian world” that makes communication with them unsafe for moral health. Some kind of infection causing personality corrosion in those who are trying to understand "their truth." In this sense, they are more dangerous than the fighters of the "Abkhaz battalion" Shamil Basayev. Andrei Babitsky, who during the Chechen war took the mission to be the voice of those whom the world did not really want to hear, never justified the outrages created by the Chechen side. And when he tried to repeat his path in the Donbass, he became infected very quickly. The violence against journalists and reprisals with Sentsov and his comrades began with justification.

In political and ideological terms, most of the rebels (in any case, their leaders) are supporters of the return of Ukraine to the power of the Russian Empire. This is their maximum program. And the minimum program is the prevention of the integration of Ukraine into the Western world. All the “federalization” projects advanced by them were needed exclusively for the sake of Donbass’s right to block important foreign policy decisions regarding all of Ukraine. And it is clear to everyone that the main thing here is now the inevitable movement of Ukraine to join NATO. Of course, such conditions of "peaceful settlement" for Ukraine are absolutely unacceptable.

There are in the Donbass those who strive for separation from Ukraine and joining Russia. There are many of these among poorly politicized residents of the region who supported the rebellion. There are those who just want to live according to their own rules within the Ukrainian state. With these, not everything is simple. The Ukrainian state cannot and should not agree that the "individual regions of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions" have their own Gestapo, whose basements will contain opponents of the feudal-paternalistic public model familiar to local residents. Any peaceful settlement should assume guarantees of free political activity on the territory of Donbass not only for the relatively moderate “right -wing sector”, but also for much more the Xenophobic party “Freedom”.

Here, however, symmetry is needed. The recognition of not only the right of supporters of the Donbass out of Ukraine to go legally to go through Quebec and Scotland, but also the right to support Ukraine to tell the residents of Lviv that they are not individual people, but the same Russians who have powered evil crusaders and insidious pindos about their national identity. This is a normal fee for the abandonment of armed struggle. “The world in exchange for legalization” is what Ukraine can offer the rebels without applying for its sovereignty and without sitting on the Kremlin's hook.

There is another question about amnesty. Rather, about the recognition of the non -impudence of the rebels for the very fact of their participation in the armed struggle. Of course, if they did not commit war crimes against the civilian population and prisoners. Without such recognition, not a single war ends.

In 2014-2015, I repeatedly wrote that the world with rebels is impossible without military defeat of Russia. And today, the prospects of peaceful settlement depend primarily on whether the countries of the West will be able to inflict Russia, if not military, then an obvious political defeat. Whether they will be able to tie the paws to the Kremlin bear.

And the latter in turn, but not by value. Nadezhda Savchenko said she did not want to go through Russia. This is the path of Russia in the Chechen war. The Donbass rebellion can be suppressed by military force. But these are victims among civilians, stripping and thousands of political prisoners later. And this can become an obstacle to Ukraine for Ukraine - even more serious than Putin Pahanat.
