The 115th element of the periodic table will be called Muscovy - in honor of the Moscow region. This is stated in a press release from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research from Dubna, one of the organizations that discovered the element.
As stated in the message of the institute, the synthesis of the 115th element “was carried out in Dubna at JINR at the accelerator complex U-400 of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions. G.N. Flerov in the reactions of accelerated Ca-48 ions with actinide targets”.
The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry officially recognized the discovery of element 115 in December 2015.
Two more elements synthesized in Dubna (117th and 118th) will be named tennessine (in honor of the state of Tennessee, where the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is located, it participated in the research) and oganesson (in honor of Professor Yuri Oganesyan).
Following the completion of public comment, the final decision will be published in the IUPAC Pure and Applied Chemistry.
