A Russian soldier died in Syria

On June 15, Russian serviceman Andrey Timoshenkov died in Syria. This was reported in the Ministry of Defense.

“On June 15, 2016, in the province of Homs, Andrey Timoshenkov, a serviceman guarding a humanitarian convoy of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties in Syria, prevented a car filled with explosives from breaking through to the place where humanitarian aid was given to civilians,” TASS reports.

Timoshenkov stopped a car filled with explosives, opening fire on him with small arms. During the explosion of a suicide-driven car, Andrey himself received an injury incompatible with life. Military doctors at the Khmeimim air base fought for the life of a soldier for more than a day, but Timoshenkov died from a severe wound on June 16.

• Andrei Timoshenkov is the eleventh Russian military man whose death has been officially confirmed. Earlier it became known about the death of contract soldier Vadim Kostenko, pilot of the downed Su-24 Oleg Peshkov, marine Alexander Pozynich (died during the rescue of the crew of the Su-24), military adviser Ivan Cheremisin, Fyodor Zhuravlev, commando Alexander Prokhorenko, Anton Erygin, the crew of the crashed helicopter Andrey Okladnikov and Viktor Pankov, as well as contract soldier Mikhail Shirokopoyas. The death of the latter became known in mid-June.

According to official reports, the goal of the campaign is to help the Syrian army in the fight against terrorists. On March 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the withdrawal of the bulk of Russian forces from Syria.
