Fedor Ivanovich Lidval (1870–1945) - one of the outstanding architects of the early twentieth century, masters of St. Petersburg modern, left a significant mark in the architecture of the Russian Empire and Sweden.
For twenty years, according to Lidval projects in St. Petersburg, several dozen buildings were built, which determined the new architectural appearance of the capital and the high level of St. Petersburg architecture of the 1900s-1910s. He participated in many competitions in co -authorship with prominent architects, but many projects were not implemented. Lidval taught at the architectural department of the Women's Polytechnic Institute, participated in public life, developed projects for Moscow, Kyiv, Kharkov.
At the end of 1918, Fedor Lidval moved to Stockholm, where he lived until the end of his life, continuing to consider himself a Russian architect, and years of work in St. Petersburg - the happiest. The style created by Lidwale and a group of architects of his time was called the Baltic or Northern Art Nouveau. Most buildings have currently been preserved - they are architectural monuments and cultural heritage objects.
The exposition based on the materials of the State Museum of Architecture named after A.V. Shchuseva, the Stockholm architecture museum, personal collections of Maria Rozanova, Alexander Shantsev, is dedicated to two major periods of the architect’s work, from the end of the 19th century until the 1930s, in two main cities where his architectural heritage is concentrated: Petersburg and Stockholm.
The exhibition will present historical and modern photographs, the results of architectural measurements made by students of St. Petersburg universities. The exposition will introduce the biographical facts and the main constructed objects of Fedor Lidval, including the Astoria Hotel, the building of the former Azov-Don commercial bank and the Tolstoy house.
