“And who is to blame for everything? Damed Musier. "
"Captain's daughter"
Just in case, I changed the name of the protagonist of this story, and why - you will understand from the first sentence.
I guessed that the owner of our apartment was an asshole. For example, I thought about something like that when he was boring and meticulously, until the very last penny he calculated my utility bills, and then did not return the excess paid. In addition, an electrician and plumber persistently told me about this: both of them were convinced that only an innate and life -nourished by life could force a person to organize a wiring in the house and attach a crane in the kitchen. But an asshole is not just a fool and an unhealthy. This is such a special combination of stupidity and spontaneous meanness, which until the last you try not to notice in a person.
However, that our Anatoly is an asshole, one could guess almost at once. Because only a real, excellent asshole could be so dramatic to abduct the Ikeev bed.
About this bed, the realtor also told that I contacted when I saw a suitable proposal on the Internet. For a long time he asked for the English name of the magazine where I then worked, then clarified if I had foreign citizenship (which in those days was not yet punishable by the law), and finally said that the owner was with some fear of foreigners and women.
- You see, before that, a girl lived in his apartment for several years. Frenchwoman.
- AND?
- Well, now he says, she stole a bed with him.
- How did you steal?
-Well, somehow stole. Took out. I don’t know what kind of bed. But, in general, he fears. You will somehow convince him when meeting that you will not do anything like that.
How to convince a person that you will not steal his bed - I could not imagine at all. Therefore, she went to a meeting with the owner in some excitement.
We needed this apartment desperately. I did not close the summer session in the magistracy, and I was evicted from the hostel. In a similar situation was my future neighbor. I had no money for a separate apartment: I worked as a correspondent in a political magazine, and paid me at that time not that it was bad, but not that good. My mother - a person who has truly hypnotic innocence - was unattended without the end why the editors were not ready to pay for the rental of housing for a valuable frame. Of course, I had no idea what the leadership of the magazine in the person of the chief editor was not tired of reminding any special value of the year 21. But I did not say anything like that to my mother. “Moscow,” I answered all her lamentations.
The apartment I found was a saving find: she had a wonderful location, a feasible cost for us and almost the same set of furniture in each room. Only the owner with his strange prejudices could become an obstacle.
Anatoly turned out to be a tight, even slightly dry man of about forty-with a gray-haired intelligent beard with a wedge and wonderful pale blue eyes. If not for the beard, I would find it difficult to name his age, because his face without her seemed very young, even young.
His voice was soft and insinuating.
- As you can see, the apartment is in excellent condition. I personally carried out repairs here after the past ... Genes, ”he said, showing us the kitchen. - I had to replace the coating on the countertop. That ... woman ... you can’t imagine, everything is swollen and bubbled here.
How to convince a person that you will not steal his bed - I could not imagine at all. Therefore, she went to a meeting with the owner in some excitement.
He gently stroked the cheap water -repellent film. Then he praised pure white walls and wide, densely painted window sills. In the kitchen, we hardly placed the three of us.
There was really nothing in the rooms and there is nothing: the flooring, simple paper wallpapers, lamps-plots, on the windows-tulle. From furniture - Soviet wooden chairs, an ugly dining table, one closet for two rooms, two sofas. Holding the story about the bed in my mind, I shunned sofas. But my friend suddenly asked:
“You don't mind if we buy some furniture?”
Anatoly picked up.
- Bed? - His voice fluttered slightly.
- Not really. Well, the table, for example, is another, written. And you would take this one.
Anatoly hesitated for a second, but still nodded.
“You see,” he said, softening, “the girl who lived here for three years before ... Frenchwoman ... Such a decent, sweet girl ... moving away, stole the bed from here.”
We portrayed indignant surprise.
- I was generally initially against this bed. But she certainly wanted a bed, and I went to meet her. We threw out a sofa, a wonderful sofa ... Perhaps a little already shook, but still a sofa, and it could have been sleeping on it, but she wanted this bed. I was sure that she would leave her when she was gathering to move out. We even agreed on this! And what do you think? I drove one night and took the bed with me!
We portrayed indignation again.
- The bed, of course, was the most ordinary, from this ... "Ikei." You know, I don’t really like this Western team of furniture at all, but still. And only think - Frenchwoman! They still say about them - a cultural nation. Like, not that we, Russians. How. Cultural nation! And the bed was stolen from a Russian man.
Anatoly muttered everything about the treachery of the French. And I represented a nosy French president in front of a large screen surrounded by advisers and ministers. On the screen, employees of the French special services with flashlights and weapons penetrate the apartment of Anatoly. “We take it out, we take it out,”-somehow it is heard there in a radio in French. And people in masks dragging furniture to the stairs, and then from the entrance. A helicopter hangs in the dark sky. The bed quickly cling to the cable, and now it is already flying away - among the scattering of stars, along a huge white moon. To France.
We once again assured Anatoly that the sofas are quite satisfied with us and we will keep everything in the best possible way.
The apartment on the same day became ours.
I lived in this apartment for five years. My first neighbor gathered with her man, and then a very serious girl sat down to me-a young teacher-philologist, a specialist in Pushkin, Lermontov and Baratynsky, who quickly inspired Anatoly by a reverent thrill. I was terribly envious of her ability to get him out in time, to break off in half a word and strictly report to some kind of shortcomings in the apartment. I didn't succeed. He could stand in my corridor for an hour, talking about some business that occupied him. At the same time, it was quite difficult to compose at least some clear idea of his life from these stories. He would never talk about himself, but rather about certain situations in which he was involved at this time-about some dispute with a friend or repairs in his apartment. His stories were boring, and Anatoly himself was boring - his whole dry figure, always fastened on all buttons or with lightning to the very chin. I knew that he had a brother, but where is this brother and that with him, Anatoly never mentioned. He himself did not work anywhere and lived with the money that we paid for his apartment. Once he suddenly mentioned that he had once seriously drank, but was able to tie it in time. Honestly, to introduce Anatoly to the drinking, smoking, swearing, or, for example, with a woman, it was strongly impossible. Yes, what is there-it was difficult to imagine at least some life behind him. If they told me that, having returned home, he goes straight to the closet and stands there until the next rent, I would not be surprised at all. Meanwhile, Anatoly had life. And, perhaps, more belief than many.
It turned out about six months after our settlement. There was an end to the winter when Moscow was worried about political protests. The city was joyful and anxious, some kind of change was anticipated, only no one could explain which ones. I practically did not get out of the editorial office, slept little, smoked a lot and could not think about anything except the future revolution, which, as we now know, will not be.
- But you, when you write your articles, do you do it with inspiration? - asked Anatoly, already receiving money from me and, as usual, hanging in our corridor.
-Well, with inspiration, of course, it is easier. But this does not always work out, ”I replied. - You need to work every day, you need to write every day. And it happens that you write about something necessary and important, but not very interesting to you. Or just tired.
Anatoly sighed and even seemed to be wilted.
- That is, you have no creativity there at all?
- Well, why not. Probably, there is still. But, it seems to me, creativity in its pure form requires too much mental effort. I'm not sure that this is so necessary for a good journalist. If you promote yourself to work all the time, you can probably burn at work. In journalism, specific skills are more likely needed.
- But do you have creative impulses?
- Yes. But everyone has it.
- Not everyone! -Somehow even suddenly answered Anatoly.
- I don't know. It seems to me that creativity is generally a very correct and even natural state in which every person is located from time to time. Well, there, bake the pie, open the business - I think this is all from this series. Creative energy.
“You see, Olya ...” Anatoly hesitated. “I once told you that I had thrown to drink a few years ago.” So, then something happened to me. And I suddenly began to write pictures. Can you imagine?
I blinked.
- In the sense - paintings?
- Paintings! Real! I bought canvas, paints, brushes, albums there are different. I suddenly took up abstract painting.
I blinked.
Anatoly and abstract painting did not converge in my head.
It was difficult to imagine at least some life behind him. If they told me that, having returned home, he goes straight to the closet and stands there until the next rent, I would not be surprised at all.
“You know, I just thought ... You probably also partly a creative person ... You may be interesting to look at the last?”
- On the picture?
- On the picture. I would send you a photo by e -mail. If, of course, this may be interesting to you.
- Yes, I ... I don't understand anything about it!
“But I don’t understand anything about it!” I have one familiar art critic. I already showed everything to him. He said that it was surprisingly good. I would like to show a third -party person. Do you agree?
I shrugged and wrote to him my email address.
“Well, now you have to praise some kind of daub,” I thought dejectedly.
The picture appeared to me that evening.
And it was not a daub.
It was anything, but not a damn thing. It was probably not a very well painted picture. The work of the amateur. Self -taught. Mediocrity. In addition, also in the photo. God knows what an unbiased expert would say.
But in this picture - in the combination of these crazy colors and lines - there was definitely a certain meaning. I looked at her for a very long time and the longer I watched, the more I was convinced that everything in her turned out in a completely random way. Something really suddenly descended on Anatoly. His picture was very bright, which could not be expected from such a faded, colorless person. It seemed to me that I see the broken pulp of some fruits, and the birds scurrying back and forth, and a ship with lemon sails, and a magic lake, and fields with sweet pink flowers, and ice cream, spilled right in the air. It was as if I got into some kind of children's sleep or imagination about an unknown island, about a distant country. Like all the fairy tales read in childhood and the cartoons viewed in childhood merged in one whole.
Having gathered in spirit, I honestly wrote to Anatoly that I saw in the picture, and added that, of course, I did not understand anything in painting and was unlikely to be able to choose the necessary words. According to his answer, it was clear that the artist was satisfied. Moreover, Anatoly expressed the thought in a response letter, frankly, for him - fastened to all buttons - unusual. “It seems to me that only specialists are needed by evaluation criteria,” he wrote. - An ordinary person does not need rules to watch. A little surprise and attempts to see something of your own. ”
So between us a kind of friendship began.
We still talked exclusively in the corridor of our apartment when Anatoly came for a rent. He always refused tea, said that he had just come in for a minute, but then for half an hour he could talk to me about the paintings. He told how at times he seemed to find something and then he sits down and writes-and how he himself then tries to recognize in these spots and lines that he drew.
- Imagine, Olya, sometimes finished already, and suddenly you feel - no, there is still not enough turquoise spot. Why turquoise? And why is this a spot? I don't know. But for some reason it is impossible without him.
He still sent his paintings to me by mail in the form of photos. I looked at them with pleasure and shared impressions with him in letters. These images were always bright and very warm, childishly naive, kind, fabulous.
Under the influence of Anatoly, I became interested in abstractionism, joyfully noticing something from Kandinsky and Malevich in his works. Of course, the difference was obvious to me. But he wrote so unsophisticated, not hoping for anything and not demanding anything for himself, that I did not even try to flatter him somewhere.
Anatoly was gradually revealed and a year after our move already spoke with me not only on the topic of painting and some current events of his life. So, he suddenly said that he would literally idolize the Soviet Union and more than anything in the world would dream of returning during his childhood, when ice cream in a waffle glass cost so many cents and everything was simpler, and more correctly.
“You would have been tried for parasitism there then,” I laughed. - You have unnecessary income. And your paintings would be ... They would tell you that the Soviet people do not need this.
Anatoly did not see anything funny in my words. He somehow shrugged seriously and said sedately:
- Now, you know ... it is customary to exaggerate. Then if anyone was touched, then those who leaned out very much. And I am a quiet person. I do not lean out. To quiet people then lived well.
“Is it bad for you now?”
- No, why. But ... it is uneasy. For example, everyone scares these meters for water. There were no counters in the Soviet Union. Why should I pay for water? Who decided that?
- Oh, think, water.
- You won’t think about anything. You are in vain, you are undermining. There to pay for the water, but there for the fare is there, there is a tax, there is a tax. A penny saves the ruble. In the Soviet Union, the state was for man, not man for the state, that's how it is now.
His picture was very bright. It seemed to me that I see the broken flesh of some fruits, and the birds scurrying back and forth, and a ship with lemon sails, and ice cream, spilled right in the air.
Here I was not up to fun.
- Anatoly, what are you saying? What is this state for humans when so many people were repressed?
- This is all very exaggerated. There were some ... excesses, but not in the same quantities, as they say now. We lived very well with the family. Worthy. And the others around lived very well. Then, after all, the relationship was completely different. The neighbors were known by names.
I got angry.
- Well, to write a denunciation, of course, it would be better to know the name! Millions of denunciations!
- This is all very exaggerated.
- Oh, you better tell me: how is your work?
Talking about the paintings reconciled us.
A couple of times I tried out of curiosity to find out his attitude to the president, who passed street protests and political courts, which quickly followed these performances. But Anatoly dismissed these issues. He said that he respects the president, because people chose him, and since people chose him, then there should be a worthy person. He claimed that everyone had their own place. And since the president sits on his third term, it means that this is exactly his place. He hardly noticed street protests. Only once he carefully asked if our magazine would close. I did not expect anxiety for my fate. However, Anatoly immediately added that he was worried about the stability of my salary.
He painted a lot then. He had something like a golden period-for two years, letters with paintings regularly came to me. At that time he freshed, pulled himself up. His eyes became brighter and warmer. Meanwhile, my life did not become easier. There was still not enough money for anything, and the work took all my strength. I looked at Anatoly with outright envy. Moskvich. Two apartments. He lives in one. Another passes. It doesn't work. Writes pictures. It is lucky for some.
Dissatisfaction with your own life is strong in me. And at some point, I threw me-I spit on all fears, I took a loan for a trip to Italy at the bank, bought tickets and reported on Facebook a barely familiar Italian that I plan to live in his house for a couple of weeks. From fatigue, I did not care what people would think about me and where would I get the money later. The Italian, with whom we later became big friends, gladly agreed to shelter me and even helped organize holidays.
It seems to be the end of July. Anatoly, who appeared behind the rent, found me in a state of euphoria - inspired by his courage, I collected a suitcase and unless I did not sing with happiness. I went to his corridor in a spacious colored sundress to the heels, belted with a yellow scarf. Anatoly told me:
- Hello, Olya.
And he froze, as if some power reached him with me.
It seemed that the combination of the flowers surrounding me was completely bewitched.
Vice versa.
- No. Вы знаете…
- How so? - I was surprised. - Why?
- I don't know!
- I was surprised.
- I don't know.
- Nothing.
But that was all ended.
- How? - How? Yes.
- Chair!
- How is that?
For what?
This is unacceptable!
- Why?
Threaten.
