On the night after the defeat from Wales, which meant the departure of the Russian national team with the euro, Leonid Slutsky talked with the players in the hotel room. “We all unanimously uttered the phrase:“ We are shit. ” This given must be accepted because it is an important reference point. Like alcoholics, ”the coach said in an interview with Sports.ru.
Slutsky identified three main reasons for the unsuccessful performance of the national team - not in a specific match, but in general at the tournament.
Firstly, he hoped that players would quickly master the tactics that he chose for the team.
Secondly, he failed to achieve the full functional readiness of the players: with increasing loads in training, some players, as Slutsky put it, “just swam”.
Thirdly, in the decisive match with Wales, according to Slutsky, the main thing was to show character and dedication, but it was this that the players did not. “The most common claim of the fans:“ Yes, there is not enough skill, you are not playing in the top ligs. But you run, you are fighting. ” For the fact that in the match with Wales there was no this “run and fight”, I am ashamed, ”the coach said.
Slutsky considers the reason for this lack of dedication the limit on foreign players in the Russian championship, because of which players with the Russian passport do not have to constantly fight for the place in the club. When asked what he would change in Russian football, if he had such an opportunity, Slutsky replied that he would first cancel the limit on the legionnaires. In addition, the coach suggested introducing a salaries ceiling for Russian players.
“If you have a complete cellar of potatoes, why do you need to go digging it? Moreover, you have it from the first day, you were born - and immediately a complete cellar <...> there is a whole galaxy of players grown by the limit, which are so guaranteed to take place in the main composition, so guaranteed to have all life blessings that they do not need to dig potatoes, ”said Slutsky.
“I don’t want to blame the players for something. I'm not talking about them, but about the system. Now, if you can work 30 percent every day, but get 100 percent of the salaries - will you work at least 50 percent? ”
