
The situation in the Donbass worsens. The number of civilians who died as a result of a conflict in eastern Ukraine last June reached a record mark from August 2015. This is stated inthe report of the Coordination of Humanitarian issues (UKGV) of the UN.
In total, 12 people were killed, another 57 people were injured. The majority suffered from artillery shelling - four dead and 37 wounded. At the same time, according to the report, the parties to the conflict used artillery systems, the use of which is prohibited by the Minsk agreements. Five more people died, and 14 were injured, blown up on mines and homemade explosive devices.
In total, according to VSGV estimates, 9740 people were killed from the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, 21.88 thousand suffered. Among the dead - up to 2 thousand civilians.
The document also states that the situation in the east of Ukraine will rather deteriorate, since both sides seek to capture objects in the buffer zone, which leads to a reduction in the distance between opponents. In addition, shelling often occurs near settlements and checkpoints on the contact line, which increases the risks of people crossing it every day.
In April, the UN World Food Program stated that 1.5 million Ukrainians faced the threat of hunger due to conflict in eastern Ukraine. The report noted that about 300 thousand people are already experiencing an acute shortage of food and need urgent assistance.
“Two years of violence, shelling, life in fear left an indelible mark in the life of thousands of people in the east of Ukraine,” said the representative of the UN VPP in Ukraine Dzhankarlo Stopponi. “The conflict is still ongoing and we must do everything in order to get to these people as soon as possible. The most serious shortage of food is experienced by residents of the regions of the Luhansk Region and settlements along the "conflict line" that were not controlled by the Government of Ukraine, - noted in the message.
