The Russian Orthodox Church opposed the installation of the statue of Christ in St. Petersburg Cereteli's work

The St. Petersburg diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church did not support the idea of ​​installing a 80-meter statue of Jesus Christ in the city of the authorship of Zurab Cereteli. According to RIA Novosti, this was stated by the chairman of the department for the relationship between the Church and the Society of the Diocese, Archpriest Alexander Pelin.

According to him, if such a monument is installed in St. Petersburg, this will cause "irreparable damage to the architectural appearance of the city."

“As an option, it can, of course, put it for Kronstadt, there, in the sea, on some island, Fort, so that he serves as a lighthouse. But in St. Petersburg - in any case,” the agency’s interlocutor emphasized.

"Installation of this kind of giant statues is not part of the Orthodox tradition," Pelin added.

Earlier it became known that Zurab Tsereteli allegedly suggested that the St. Petersburg authorities erect his monument to Jesus Christ about 80 meters high (47 meters - a pedestal and 33 statues). The work of Cerethels, according to the media, was supposed to be installed in Sochi, but there there was no appropriate site for it.

The Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture of St. Petersburg said that the possibility of installing the statue is being considered, but there are no solutions yet. The Government of the Leningrad Region proposed its options for placing sculpture in the region - on the territory of the Nevsky Forest Park in the Vsevolozhsk district or in the Koltush Upland.
