1851. Sergey Stepnyak-Kravchinsky was born

165 years ago, on July 13, 1851, Sergey Mikhailovich Stepnyak-Kravchinsky was born (real surname Kravchinsky, pseudonym S. Stepnyak), Russian revolutionary and writer. Having joined the underground organization "Earth and Volya", Stepnyak-Kravchinsky in August 1878 mortally wounded the chief gendarmes Nikolai Mezenstsov. He explained his act as follows: “Mesentsov was killed by us ... Not as a person who holds the post of chief of the gendarmes - we consider the murder a measure too terrible to resort to her to demonstrate; the Adjutant General Mesentsov was killed by us as a person who committed a number of crimes, which he could and should not commit.”

After the terrorist act, Stepnyak-Kravchinsky fled to Switzerland, subsequently moved to England, where he was engaged in journalism and literary work. His most famous works are the journalistic books "Underground Russia" and "Russia under the rule of the tsars", as well as the novel "Andrei Kozhukhov".
