David Cameron resigned

British Prime Minister David Cameron has resigned. Before that, he visited Queen Elizabeth II.

Theresa May, who is now home secretary, will be the new prime minister.

• David Cameron first announced that he would step down after the referendum on the UK's exit from the European Union. Most of the inhabitants of the country on June 23 voted for the exit, while Cameron himself advocated the preservation of the UK in the EU. Later it became known that the resignation was scheduled for July 13.
