Pavel Sheremet was blown up in his car at about 8 a.m. on his way to work. The car belonged to his common-law wife, owner of the Ukrayinska Pravda publication Alena Pritula. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the explosive device was equivalent to 400–600 g of TNT. The head of the national police, Khatia Dekanoidze, promised to coordinate the work of the investigation task force, which will include police officers, the SBU and representatives of the FBI in Ukraine. Among the main versions, the investigation is considering professional activities, hostile relations with certain individuals and a Russian trace, said Zoryan Shkiryak, adviser to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. “In conditions of war and aggression, I do not exclude the presence of foreign interests here,” said President Petro Poroshenko.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded by saying that Ukraine is becoming “a mass grave for journalists and journalism.” And the Department of Information and Press of the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned those who “in their minds, poisoned by Russophobia, immediately figured out a certain Russian trace.”

Ukrainian political scientist Vladimir Fesenko is inclined to believe that the assassination attempt was on Prytula: “There are no obvious reasons for the murder of Pavel. Maybe something was not in plain sight, but he really was not involved in information confrontations or corporate wars. But some people might be interested in Ukrainska Pravda or dissatisfied with its activities.”
