The last of them occurred on Sunday evening in the Bavarian city of Ansbach, when the Syrian refugee blew himself up near the venue of the music festival. As a result, 12 people were injured. On Saturday, another Syrian refugee killed a pregnant woman. On Friday, a German Iranian citizen shot nine people in a shopping center. In this case, the authorities excluded the likelihood that the criminal was a terrorist. On Monday last week, a refugee from Afghanistan wounded two passengers with an ax on the train.

After four attacks in a row, writes Bloomberg , Germany is in tense state, and its government is forced to look for ways to restore calm and safety. The frequency of these incidents inevitably increases tension regardless of their genesis. Although the leadership emphasizes that, for example, shooting on Friday is in no way connected with the migration policy of German Chancellor Angel Merkel, this case still contributes to the general irritation to this particular policy. So far, Germany has not encountered organized terrorism, from which France and Belgium suffered. However, starting with the eve of the last New Year, she systematically faces the problem of crime among refugees.

Politico notes the growth of Merkel’s popularity recently. Initially, German citizens were dissatisfied with the influx of migrants from Syria, who became the result of the open migration policy of Merkel. Events testifying to a decrease in security or economic instability in the country usually quickly result in mass distrust of the government.

Indeed, discontent in connection with the migration crisis at some point led to a significant decrease in Merkel's popularity. However, the July public opinion polls (even before the last incidents) showed that the Chancellor's popularity has already recovered after a decline, reaching 59%, that is, a maximum, counting since September 2015.

In principle, for a conservative country, where voters most appreciate continuity and do not like changes, this is not very unexpected, the author comments. Nevertheless, taking into account the scale of initial discontent, Merkel rise in the popularity rating is notable. The question is how much this new rise is stable. This will probably become clear from a public reaction based on the results of the last series of incidents. They undoubtedly served as a reminder of the ongoing instability. Although the attacks were not interconnected, they, of course, excited the public, which already poorly believes that refugees do not pose a serious threat to security.

By and large, the consequences of these incidents for Merkel will depend on what response it will take. The author emphasizes that these cases of violence are far from the only problem that Merkel has now encountered. Of the latest events, this is also, at least, an ongoing migration crisis, the decision of Britain to leave the EU and banking hardships in Italy.
