
The international historical, human rights and charitable society Memorial was awarded Wilberfors Medal "For the Work on the Protection of Human Rights in the Russian Federation and perpetuating the memory of the victims of persecution by the state."
At the International Memorial in Moscow, the UK Ambassador to Russia Lauri Bristow presented the award to the chairman of the board of Memorial to Arseny Roginsky and a member of the board of Memorial Alexander Cherkasov, the site of Memorial reports.
William Wilberfors (1759–1833) - English politician, philanthropist, one of the leaders of the movement for the abolition of slavery in the UK in the late XVIII - early XIX centuries. Wilberfors medal is awarded by the Fund of his named after the merits in the field of protecting human rights and the spread of the benefits of democracy. The medal shows a person in chains and the inscription “Am I Not a Man and A Brother” (“Isn't I a person and your brother?”).
Among the Wilbergorfsa medal, the International Human Rights Office of Amnesty International and Russian journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya, who was awarded posthumously.
