The Russian weightlifting team in full force was suspended from participation in the 2016 Olympic Games. This decision was made by the International Weightlifting Federation. The reason for the suspension of athletes was the use of doping.
- The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on July 18 presented a report that refers to the systematic use of prohibited drugs in Russian sports. In addition, sports officials were convicted of involvement in the concealment of positive doping tests.
- In connection with the publication of the WADA report, the participation of the Russian team in the Olympics in full force turned out to be questionable. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) did not remove the entire team, giving the international federations the right to decide which of the Russians can take part in the Games.
- It is expected that the final list of Russian athletes who will go to the Olympics will be known on July 30. The 2016 Games will start on August 5th.
