In 1989, the writer was elected to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Represented opposition forces. After the self -growing of the Supreme Council in 1991, he did not engage in politics.

In 2009, the bank of unrecognized Abkhazia released the coin with a face value of 10 APSARs with a portrait of Iskander. The coin has become part of the series "Outstanding Personality of Abkhazia."

In Moscow, the library No. 202 is named after Iskander in the western district of Fili-Davydkovo.
