1991 START I Treaty
25 years ago, on July 31, 1991, the Soviet-American Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START-1) was signed in Moscow. Each side was to have no more than 6,000 thermonuclear warheads left. The terms of the agreement were fulfilled by December 2001. By this time, Russia had 1,136 strategic delivery vehicles and 5,518 warheads left, while the United States had 1,237 strategic delivery vehicles and 5,948 warheads.
