T. Gray. "Ode on the Death of a Favourite Cat"
Pancur, White Panahur, how happy we are with you
Some, together, is a monk and a cat.
Each of us has our own work for every day:
My science, yours is a hunt.
Your burning gaze glides along the walls,
My dull look froze on the book.
You are glad when you grab the mouse with your claws,
I am glad when my mind will catch a thought.
Everyone is satisfied with his art, and not one interferes with the other.
So we live. Some, together. Without envy, without boredom.
U.Kh. Oden. "Pangur Ban"
Once in May, when, it seemed that the whole of Russia was terrified due to publications about the suicides of adolescents, I was sitting on the sofa in the office of my psychotherapist, and the doctor suddenly said-interrupting my mournful story about how hard a young, pretty, healthy girl lives:
- You know, I’m thinking about these suicides among children. Why this happens.
- And you think why? - I became interested.
Such moments - when the doctor suddenly spoke about my personal and insignificant, but about global and universal - I really liked it.
“I think a modern child is turned off from the culture of death,” she said. - Adults do not talk to him about death, do not take with them to the cemetery. As a result, a person does not develop any idea of death. It seems to him that death is the cessation of momentary suffering, and not the end of everything. He does not understand that the death is followed by a coffin, earth, decomposition.
- And if the child does not want to in the cemetery?
- What does it mean? Of course, does not want! Nobody wants to in the cemetery! And the child ... Well, the child wants to sit at home, mess around with gadgets. But there is family duty. And death is what you need to divide in the family. The parent at key points should be persistent.
“We have never forced anything to do in our family,” I said.
The doctor looked at me as if thinking whether to utter the next phrase. Then she said:
- You can see from you.
This conversation did not come from my head for a long time. Moreover, my birthday was nearing, which means the day of the death of Gerundia. This death, which many would call (and, of course, they will call) insignificant, for two years now lies in my conscience. I know for sure what is to blame. And that I have no excuses.
But the doctor’s words made me think about the fact that maybe I know about death a little more, imagine at least it is vague, even a little, how terrible her parish, I ...
But by the way, everything would be the same.
My poor.
- There is family duty. And death is what you need to divide in the family.
Our death did not have passed our death, but for children it was imperceptibly. Even the animals died very quietly with us. For example, Alma’s dog is my black bearded nanny - finally, sheltered us all, fell into its usual place in the corridor, snapped and left. Not immediately we even noticed its final absence. Her death did not frighten me, but rather caused bewilderment. I got used to the fact that Alma is always somewhere nearby, strong and calm, ready to substitute my huge back for short riding walks around the rooms. I got used to the fact that in the morning she came to me, shaking the squalling beard in the porridge, and pulled the blanket, and I shouted: “A oat beard! Oatmeal beard! " - And fought back. How many substissible weaners we fell so ... But I did not care about her, did not walk with her, did not feed. For me, she was something like an assistant to mom and dad, a devoted servant at home, someone who loves me selflessly and whom I do not have to love so in response.
I remember how my father and I went on a truck in the Belkinsky Forest, and Almino, wrapped in a green bedspread, swayed lifelessly in the body behind. I knew that this was no longer an alma, but simply a heavy carcass and that this carcass is already not Almina kindness and love for me. I also knew that I had to cry, but I did not want to cry, and I was afraid to ask my father, why there is no more alma and where is she now.
I knew that it was very dangerous to talk about death with adults-they mumble, all confused, mutter something slurred, and most importantly, they can suddenly say this, from which it would become too scary.
I was scared for six or seven years.
Parents then once again sent me to the Summer to the Ryazan village - to the ominous grandmother Ana. Relations did not work out with her. Firstly, under the roof of her house, I first encountered forbidden literature. Three times I stole the book “100 Great Lovers” from the sideboard and three times was broken for this with improvised means - jumpers and a badmintone racket. Secondly, my grandmother did not allow to jump on the beds. Village beds - especially magnificent down pillows covered with tulle - attracted me with inexplicable power. But as soon as I disturbed the majestic rest of the down pillows, as my grandmother was immediately, and with her some of her punishing guns.
With these two of my pernicious addictions, my grandmother, unlike my parents, never left me alone at home. Perhaps that is why, and maybe, because it belonged to the generation for which death was always firmly inscribed in the order of things, my grandmother once took me to the village funeral.
I don’t remember who was buried. Some huge grandfather with a white wire beard. He lay in a painted coffin, the coffin stood on the table, and nothing but a beard was visible from him. I really wanted to touch this beard, and my grandmother, as if feeling another devilish passion in me, sent me to play with village children. I immediately found some shaggy girl in his underpants and found out from her where in the house of the bedrooms and whether there are down pillows with tulle there. The next hours - or maybe it was minutes - I remember how one of the happiest and most carefree in my life.
I did not think about death that day at all.
However, the immovable white beard, although I did not occupy me very much, but still periodically arose in unclear thoughts. Having not decided to ask my grandmother’s funeral, I turned to the kindest aunt Ole, the wife of my mother’s uncle. She, not wanting anything bad for a second, said that sooner or later we would all die-from old age, from illnesses, from accidents or any absurdities. I remember how much I was worried. And how hard it was for me to ask a question whether my mother would die.
“We will all die,” Aunt Olya told me. - And your mother will die.
I immediately imagined that my mother is no more and that by the fall she would not come to the village to pick me up. I cried, went out into another room, found my younger cousin Nastya there and through tears told her that there was death in the world and we will all die, but the main thing is that my mother will die and her mother, Aunt Olya, will die too.
- I want you to live easily! Easily! Do not worry about anything! About nothing!
The news shocked Nastya just like me. And for a long time later we sat on the couch with her and cried bitterly, and everyone in the world cursing Aunt Olya, which we could not stop burying, did not know how to console us. The echo of that deep feeling of loss - not yet what happened, but so monstrous in its predetermination and inevitability - I can easily revive in myself so far. I remember this feeling, I remember the roared, the red face of Nastya and how difficult it was for me to breathe because of tears and terrible pain.
They reassured me with a conversation about God and heavenly angels.
Since then, I have tried to seriously not think about death, went to church, read the gospel and somehow convinced myself that in the future, frightening darkness there is nothing but light.
When my grandfather died many years later, I did not come to a funeral from Moscow.
“There is nothing to stare at the dead,” my mother told me strictly in the phone. - Psychologists write that you, your creative people, have a subtle mental organization. You are impressed and then you will be like some Dostoevsky with his horse.
- Mom, Nietzsche had a horse ...
- Do not mamk! Dostoevsky also had some kind of horse there! In general, do not look at all these horrors. Your generation can live easily. I want you to live easily! Easily! Do not worry about anything! About nothing!
But I never had a mild life that my mother wanted for me. And why - I myself do not know.
It was always hard for me. It seemed that I myself was looking for this severity - in my studies, in work, in all my hobbies. If you study, then something that will certainly be given the most difficult thing. If you work, then where you need to give all your strength. If you love, then someone is unattainable. So I studied at a physical and technical school, to which I had not the slightest tendency. So I fell in love with the actors of capital theaters and teachers. So she wrote about the metallurgical and chemical industry after the university. So for three and a half years she worked in a political journal, where most employees were not delayed for more than two months.
The whole essence of these efforts came down to survival, which seemed to me the most worthy occupation. A light life seemed to me the destiny of people very stupid, or unhealthy, or some malacholny. Well, in fact, how can a reading, thinking, experiencing person in Russia can live a light life? How can he not suffer when terrible laws are adopted, when the innocent are put in prisons, when crowds of people, according to independent media reports, run abroad, when winter stands outside the window for six months, and Russia - which gave birth to, raised and raised - is gloomy around and the silence is painful and terrible?
No, you need to suffer, and cry, and complain, and be afraid of everything in the world, and most importantly-the future, which, of course, has already taken possession of some kind of evil.
Where did these thoughts come to me - I still do not know. Perhaps the ominous grandmother Anya, who lived in her quiet village as if in a war, gave me something, or maybe they were involuntarily impressed by parents, who had been waiting for some disaster for the last fifteen years. I wanted anyone to protect me, protect me from all troubles, from Moscow, from unhappy love, from an evil editor and a cruel country, but I did not know who it could be.
Anxiety. A terrible anxiety - for itself, for my future, for the children’s unborn, I owned me completely.
And when this fear reached the climax, Gerundi appeared in my life.
It was also in the spring - it seems, in April.
There was a war. Well, that is, how it went ... Somewhere there was a war. Not under our windows and not even in our country. And even - according to the federal media, it was not our country who took part in this war. However, everyone knew that ours were fighting there, and ours die there, and we will also have to answer for all this.
In the editorial office of a small political magazine where I then worked, everything, of course, was also only about the war. The editor-in-chief-a strong, loud, domineering woman-looked very enthusiastic, said that we live in an “interesting time”, and for some reason all the time wanted to send a quiet non-native vegetarian who worked in our “politician” department to the war.
I admired the military reports and felt very worthless. On social networks, they extolled heroes who went under bullets to write reports, and I sat in the editorial office and made materials about endless political courts.
Besides, I was lonely then. The two most beloved people are Latvy and A.G. - We went together in a pilgrimage to Spain. A.G. was especially missing, who was much older and helped me a lot. I really wanted this to the pilgrimage, but the work did not allow me to throw everything for a whole month, and besides, I knew that I would not endure a long walk - as I could not endure any war.
And at this hopeless time, Gerundia appeared.
Shortly before that my parents had a cat, and they were grieved. Their experiences were incomprehensible to me, and I decided to find another cat to them. In early May, in Facebook, I came across a post that a white kitten was found on the street, and I immediately responded.
I was handed a skinny creature. An extensive set of drugs and a long manuscript instruction manual were attached to it.
The cat, as it turned out, saved the former member of the radical organization, which during my youth had a powerful romantic force, and is now recognized as extremist and is prohibited in Russia. I went home not without curiosity to him and was quite rewarded: the former member of the now extremist organization and his wife in the apartment lived an unimaginable number of cats. They were everywhere - on sofas and cabinets, in the kitchen and in the corridor, on the beds and in trays; That was a real cat kingdom in which any person stuck like a obscene cuckoo. Under the gaze of dozens of cat eyes, a skinny creature was handed to me, covered not even with wool, but as if white fluff. An extensive set of drugs and a long manuscript instruction manual were attached to it. Suddenly it turned out that you can’t just take and get a cat. I was ordered to feed him with parasites, to rinse his ears regularly, add vitamins to food, read compounds of bags with food, plug all the cracks in the apartment, put the nets on the windows, buy claws and God knows what else. I listened to all this with horror, looked at a long list of recommendations in my hands and did not understand how people with cats live in general. How did my mom and dad live with a cat? I suddenly remembered anxiously that the Cat of the Marquis from my childhood did not have a claw.
I drove home with a cat as the greatest value. But then everything went wrong.
Father on the phone was very delighted with a gift. What could not be said about my mother. By the way, I think that parents have some mechanisms that are included against their will. For example, all mothers at the sight of any animal must first say: “Only through my corpse!” They may even want this puppy or kitten, but they can’t say otherwise. They open their mouth, and the mouth suddenly says: "Only through my corpse!" Then the mandatory ritual should follow: the child yells, writhes faces, presses the kitten to his chest, the kitten flows his eyes, and the parent, finally reveling in his power, suddenly gives good.
But I have been not five years old.
“Okay,” I said a stubborn mother. - The kitten will remain with me. I will be his mistress.
She said and scared.
These words - “I will be his mistress” - suddenly sounded like a spell that cannot be canceled. For some reason, the mother also scared, went back, said that she would take the cat personally, but I could no longer allow her.
The cat looked at me with a unblinking blue gaze.
I was uneasy.
Very soon, an endless dialogue arose in our quiet soviet kovoshka, one of the participants of which never said anything.
Very soon, our house - our quiet soviet kopecks in paper wallpaper - was filled with sounds, previously unusual for it. Moreover, an endless dialogue suddenly arose in it, one of the participants of which never said anything.
- Leave. I pray you, leave. Let me sleep. Let me sleep. No, no, stop. Leave. Leave. Go, I say. What are you gnawing there? What are you gnawing? Lord, the wire from the phone! Go! Leave!
- You can’t bite behind the ear! I forbid you to bite in your ear! I command you - do not bite my ear! If you want to lie in bed, do not bite!
- You are taking the sofa. No, you really think, I don’t hear that you are taking the sofa?
-No, you can’t drag dust from under the refrigerator. It is forbidden. Leave from there. And you can’t eat dust from under the refrigerator too! Spit, spit out ... pah, what a rubbish. Do you not see that this is dirt? Black.
- Stop. No, I can't sleep when you lie on my face. I can't!
My neighbor at first looked at the cat with great doubts and discontent. A young scientist, a specialist in Pushkin, Baratynsky and Lermontov, she preferred archival silence in the apartment.
“Turtles,” my neighbor said. - The best pets are turtles.
I knew that the turtles lived in the house of her parents and that their fate in the most ridiculous way was connected with the Baratynsky and his dear spouse: one tortoise was Achille Abramich, the other was Pepinka. I also knew that Achilles Abramych was an extremely aggressive creature and, unlike Baratynsky, who loved his wife very much, all the time expelled Popinka from the aquarium. In general, in the second year of my life with my neighbor about turtles, I knew much more than about cats, and they did not seem so cold -blooded to me.
A neighbor with a cat reconciled two circumstances. Firstly, his name was Gerundi. With this name, they handed it to me - that is, a cat, as if fate itself condemned to live with a philologist and journalist. Secondly, all the costs and inconvenience associated with the content of the animal, I promised to take on.
What immediately regretted.
Being a man who, without a shudder, cannot take out a garbage bucket, I faced terrible trials. Firstly, I had to clean the tray. Secondly, I had to clean the cat ears in which some black rubbish lived and ravaged. The cat himself at these difficult moments behaved ugly for me: he rejoiced at the pure filler in the tray, like the first snow, and drove him all over the corridor, and during disgusting ears cleaning he tried to eat dirty cotton wool.
There were a lot of other inconvenience.
I conscientiously shut up all the cracks in the apartment, but the cat behind the sofa found an unaccounted hole and slept only there. In that hole was terribly dusty, and this dust, of course, then walked throughout the apartment. In the end, I was furious, I took a vacuum cleaner and rags and cleaned all the places where I could reach, after which the inciting lost its charm for the cat. However, he grew rapidly on the “tender fillet of the lamb with the addition of cereals and minerals” and did not seek new entertainment for himself for long.
"Easily.
Old.
I don't remember.
He looked at me.
