1941 Atlantic Charter

75 years ago, on August 14, 1941, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and US President Franklin Roosevelt, while at the Argentia naval base in Newfoundland, signed a joint declaration called the Atlantic Charter.

It condemned territorial changes that were not "in accordance with the freely expressed desire of the peoples concerned", proclaimed the right of peoples to choose a form of government, the restoration of "sovereign rights and self-government of those peoples who were deprived of this by force", as well as free access to all countries , great or small, to world trade and raw materials necessary for the economic prosperity of states.

In September of the same year, several countries of the anti-Hitler coalition, including the USSR, joined the Atlantic Charter. Later, the document served as the basis of the UN Charter.
