The Mufti of the North Caucasus supported the practice of "female circumcision"

The Legal Initiative Foundation published a report on the distribution of “female circumcision” in Russia - operations to remove external genitals to girls. This practice is prohibited by the UN as exempting and violating women's rights. On August 15, a report was published on the distribution of “female circumcision” in Russia. Such operations are associated with the removal of external genitals in girls; Sometimes they lead to death. According to the UN resolution, “female circumcision” violates the rights of women to health, safety and physical inviolability, the right to freedom from torture and inhuman circulation. The UN banned this practice in 2012.

“Female circumcision” is common in many African and Middle Eastern countries. As stated in the report published by the Legal Initiative Foundation, operations on the genitals of girls are carried out in Russia - in particular, in some areas of Dagestan. Girls aged three to 12 years are subjected to operations.

The chairman of the coordination center of Muslims of the North Caucasus spoke in support of the “female circumcision”. According to Mufti Ismail Berdiev, Islam does not prescribe such operations, but they are necessary "so that debauchery is not on Earth, so that sexuality decreases." In this regard, Mufti said that “all women” should be cut. Subsequently, Berdiev made a reservation that he did not call for circumcision of all women, since "it is simply impossible."

Mufti was supported by the Archpriest of the Russian Orthodox Church Vsevolod Chaplin. According to him , if the tradition has been consecrated for centuries and recognized as a majority of women living in it, then Muslims have the right to it. Comparing female circumcision with the male, Chaplin added that it is still not worthwhile to cut all women: for example, this is useless to Orthodox women, because they "do not levy."

The Council of Mufties of the Russian Federation said that “female circumcision” is a tradition alien to Islam. As the Deputy Chairman of the Council, Rushan Abbyasov, explained, “the Almighty prohibits any injury to his body,” and the argument that “female circumcision” contributes to the taming of carnal passion, has no evidence.

The Prosecutor General’s Office was asked to check the report on “female circumcision”. The proposal was made by the chairman of the Commission of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation to support family, children and motherhood, singer Diana Gurtskaya. She asked Yuri Chaika to study the facts in the document, "taking into account the extreme delicacy of the topic, the features of national education and the need to comply with the right to religion of traditional Islam." The Prosecutor General’s Office said that Gurtsky’s appeals have not yet been received.
