An action in support of family values “Give me life” will be held in the Primorsky Territory, writes RIA AMI. From August 23 to 25, doctors will announce a moratorium on abortions - “Days of Silence.”
“For three days, no operations on artificial termination of pregnancy will be performed in any medical institution in Primorye. Women will be given time to make the right choice,” said Primorye’s chief obstetrician-gynecologist, Evgenia Shutka.
During the days of the campaign, events are held aimed at strengthening the family, preventing abortions, promoting motherhood and family planning. Gynecologists, psychologists and other specialists will participate in them. At educational institutions and maternity hospitals, doctors will give lectures on the importance of preserving women’s reproductive health, the happiness of motherhood, and will also talk about the consequences of abortion surgery.
Federal Law No. 323 on the protection of the health of citizens of the Russian Federation states that “one-day abortions” have been prohibited since 2013. On the day a woman applies for a referral for an abortion, this operation is not performed. A period of “silence” is provided for all pregnant women who apply to medical institutions. The patient is consulted by doctors and sent to think about her decision, that is, doctors give the opportunity to refuse the operation. Depending on the stage of pregnancy, the “days of silence” vary: for late borderline periods from 11 weeks, three days are provided to think about the situation.
According to Evgenia Shutka, about 10% of all women who apply for a referral for an abortion, after talking with doctors, refuse abortions.
In early April, a bill was introduced into the State Duma offering financial rewards to women for refusing an abortion in order to give birth to a child and give him up to be raised by the state.
According to official statistics, 920 thousand abortions are performed in Russia per year. According to Article 56 of the Federal Law of the Russian Federation “On the fundamentals of protecting the health of citizens,” every woman has the right to independently decide the issue of motherhood. It is possible to artificially terminate a pregnancy up to 12 weeks if desired. A free abortion is performed upon referral from an antenatal clinic at an institution operating under the compulsory medical insurance program.
