VKontakte removed the ability to listen to music in its iPhone app last year after Apple removed the app from its AppStore. The American company did this after numerous complaints from copyright holders about the presence of pirated music on the social network, sources in record companies told Vedomosti.

The return of the service became possible after the signing of a music licensing agreement with the world's music majors - Universal Music, Warner Music and Sony Music, VKontakte said in a statement. Oleg Butenko’s United Music Agency entered into an agreement with the majors: it licenses music for all social networks that are part of the Mail.ru Group - “VKontakte”, “Odnoklassniki” and “Moi Mir”. According to Vedomosti sources in music companies, the group will pay all three majors approximately $7 million a year.

According to VKontakte representative Evgeny Krasnikov, now 14 million iPhone users who access the social network from mobile devices will be able to listen to music. At the beginning of September, Odnoklassniki also announced the return of music to its mobile application for iPhone.
