Some fragments of Markin’s book about the Politkovskaya case are completely, up to punctuation marks, repeat the article “How Anna Politkovskaya was killed”, published in The New Times on December 22, 2008. Barabanov worked in the journal from 2007 to 2012 and held the post of deputy chief editor.

At the same time, the publishing house emphasized that "the share of such materials is scanty." During the reprint, the deficiencies will be eliminated, assured in Eksmo.

On September 7, Markin presented his first book at the International Moscow Book Exhibition-Fair from the cycle "Secrets of the Investigative Committee", which describes the investigations of five high-profile criminal cases.

On the same day, the journalist of Novaya Gazeta Nadezhda Prussenkova said that Markin borrowed fragments of her article on the investigation of the murder of Politkovskaya, published for two years. Moreover, he did this without the permission of the editorial office of the "new" and an indication of open sources.

Markin in response stated that the coincidences were due to the description of "the same specific circumstances recorded by the materials of the criminal case and voiced in court." At the same time, he called Prussenkov "to anyone but his swamp, not known and unnecessary journalist", which "wants to promote on his name."

However, on September 8, Markin apologized to Prussenkova . “Yesterday it was a very emotional day, I consider it my duty to apologize to the journalist of Novaya Gazeta,” Markin wrote. “I publicly apologize to the hope of Prussenkova, who was offended as a woman and journalist unusual for me with a rude statement.”
