Vada confirmed the hacking of systems as a result of a hacker attack. The agency recognized that the hackers managed to access the documents of athletes, in particular to information about the use of certain drugs for medical purposes with the permission of doctors. According to Vada, this is only about documents related to the Olympics in Rio; There are no reasons to believe that hackers hacked other databases. According to the agency, attacks were carried out from Russia by a hacker group calling itself TSAR Team or Fancy Bear. The actions of hackers in Wada were called a crime.

Fansy Bear hackers are suspected of hacking the US Democratic Party systems. This group was also suspected of participating in industrial, political and military espionage. Fancy Bear attributed an attack on the German Bundestag and the French television channel TV5 Monde in 2015. According to Crowdstrike, which investigated the hacking of the Democratic Party, Fancy Bear is associated with the main intelligence department of the Russian Armed Forces.

Russia rejected the charges of breaking Wada. The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov announced the non-involvement of “official Moscow, government, some Russian services” to hack Wad and added that “such unfounded accusations do not decorate any organization if they are not supported by something significant.” Earlier, Peskov in this way refuted the involvement of the Russian Federation in the hacking of the National Committee of the Democratic Party of the United States.
