Ukraine filed new claims against Russia

Ukraine initiated arbitration proceedings against Russia for violating the UN Convention on the Law of Law. This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

The lawsuit was filed with the aim of protecting the rights of Ukraine "as a coastal state in the sea zones adjacent to the Crimea in the Black Sea, the Sea of ​​Azov and the Kerch Strait." The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that despite the protests of Ukraine, Russia continues to perform illegal actions within the sea zones of Ukraine. Therefore, Ukraine is forced to turn to arbitration in accordance with the provisions of the Convention.

In addition, Ukraine sent a request for consultations with Russia to the WTO for restrictions on the transit of Ukrainian goods through Russian territory, the Russian Ministry of Economic Development said . Submission of a request for a consultation is the first stage of filing a lawsuit. In the event that within 60 days, consultations do not lead to anything, then the creation of the referee panel can be initiated.

"The Ministry of Economic Development of Russia, together with interested departments, will carefully study the request of Ukraine and the arguments contained in it," the report said.

On Wednesday, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that on his behalf, documents were being developed for filing claims against Russia to international courts. “We are ready to fight for protecting the legitimate rights and interests of Ukraine,” the president emphasized. In particular, we are talking about the protection of both property rights of business entities of Ukraine and the protection of the rights of state institutions that were violated as a result of the annexation of Crimea. To carry out this work in the budget for 2017, an increase in financing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is provided.

The day before, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin stated Ukraine intends to file a “large -scale comprehensive lawsuit” against Russia regarding the violation of the UN law on marine law. "The first big lawsuit will be filed this week. It applies to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. It is actually comprehensive, since it contains such fundamental issues as the use of sea space, a violation of environmental safety, but also objects of cultural heritage. This is a very large -scale claim," he said.

The minister noted that Ukraine will seek compensation from Russia, but the amount of claims did not specify. “Of course, we will go to compensation, this is absolutely clear,” Klimkin said.
