In the case of torture in police custody in the Nizhny Novgorod region, eight years later, the first suspects appeared

In the Nizhny Novgorod region, in the regional investigative department of the Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee, after a confrontation in the case of electric shock torture of Sergei Lyapin at the Volodarsky district police department in 2008, two police officers received the status of suspects. This was reported on the website of the human rights organization Committee for the Prevention of Torture.

As human rights activists note, one of the suspects in the torture case has already retired from the internal affairs bodies, and the second is an active police officer. The criminal case was initiated in 2016 after the decision of the ECHR, which in 2014 recognized the fact of torture of Sergei Lyapin.

As Albert Kuznetsov, a lawyer for the Committee for the Prevention of Torture, noted, during the confrontation, his client Sergei Lyapin immediately recognized the police officers who took part in the torture.

“It’s still not easy for me to remember those events. “I am again forced to face my offenders, who, in turn, accuse me of slander and continue to try to make me out to be a petty thief in the eyes of the investigation,” Lyapin said.

Kuznetsov said that since after the confrontation the investigation had specific suspects, there were chances that the case would go to trial after so many years.
