Together not forever. What does science know about divorce?
This week, the whole world is actively discussing the news of the separation of Hollywood actors Angelina Jolie and Bred Pitt: September 20, it became known that Jolie filed for divorce. For many fans, the rupture of the couple, which was together for 12 years, was a surprise. For decades, sociologists and psychologists have been trying to calculate for decades, on which the strength of the marriage depends, why people part and how to predict or prevent divorce. Slon Magazine has collected some research results in this contradictory field.
Age matters. The age when people decide to marry is growing steadily, and the frequency of divorces in many countries decreases, and some sociologists bind these phenomena. The Pew Research Center, conducted in the United States, showed that if in the 1960s the American groom was 23 years old, and the bride 20, then in 2011 men first married after 28, and women after 26 years. At the same time, the share of divorces after the 1980s was reduced: in the same United States in 1981 there were 5.3 divorces per thousand people, in 1990 this indicator decreased to 4.7, and in 2011 amounted to only 3.6. In relation to the number of couples, the number of divorces reached a peak in 1979 and has since decreased by 24%, NYT wrote in 2014.
In Russia, young people are also entering their first marriage later , but according to divorces, the statistics are different. Our country, according to the UN , holds leadership in the number of divorces. According to Rosstat , the number of divorces reached the peak in 2003-5.9 per thousand people, but since then it decreased somewhat: in 2013 and 2014, 4.7 divorces per thousand people were recorded, in 2015-already 4.2 divorces. At the same time, 611.6 thousand divorces were registered in Russia for 1.16 million marriages in 2015.
In the crisis of divorces less. Judging by world experience, Russia can wait for a reduction in the number of divorces: people less often diverge during the years of economic instability. As Economist explains, the increase in inflation and a drop in real estate prices are pressing factors, because of which the desire of the couple can only get stronger. But the possible loss of work and monetary problems complicates the divorce and establishment of separate life. American statistics show that with the deepening of the recession in the first half of 2008, the number of divorces was reduced by 6% (compared with the same period of 2007), and in 2009, when the situation stabilized, the number of divorced marriages crawled up again. Moreover, the probability of a divorce the higher, the greater the disposable income of the family - at least, is stated by Abdur Chuudari, an economist from the University of Markett (Miluoi, USA).
