How parkour changes the teenage hierarchy, and juggling socializes autistic
Tamara Lyalenkova : Today we will talk about circus pedagogy, about how acrobatics, juggling or, say, a brack dance help children from social risk groups to get new positive experience, and to believe in disabilities to believe in their own strength.
In the Moscow studio, the artistic director and director of the UPSala-Cirk Larisa Afanasyeva and the coordinator of the pedagogical programs of the circus Maria Michelson .
( Fragment of a trip to Berlin - The game of guys with balls )
Tamara Lyalenkova : They go abroad to show performances, go travel. How do you master the space? Or was it just an improvisation?
Larisa Afanasyeva : Of course, for us, a tour is part of our program, part of our long, long program, where we do not just play the circus, and we live for 5-6 years in the creative space. Traveling is an integral part. In this sense, we are not just a social project that comes to some other country and does something incomprehensible there. We come with a very clear task - we show our performances. We change stereotypes. We will recognize this space. We definitely have friends in every city, whom we come to visit. We definitely have a story where we cook together with friends. Naturally, we will learn about this city.
Once we were in Belgium at the circus festival. And the festival participants were asked where anyone wants to go in their free time. And all together said for some reason - at McDonald's. And the "Uppsala -Circus" said - and we will go to the National Gallery to watch Bruegel's paintings. Of course, in this sense, our noses were highly raised, because we, as a social project, suddenly did so.
In Berlin, there was another attempt to find out about the city. And since we are a circus for hooligans, and we must do something turned upside down, we will learn these cities differently. This year we learned this through a ping-pungo ball.
Tamara Lyalenkova : Larisa, do you fit into some European projects related to social aspects? Or are you the only circus for hooligans and not only? And what do we mean by this?
Larisa Afanasyeva : In fact, when we began to create our circus 16 years ago, along with Astrid Shorn, this concept of the “social project” was not just bored, but somehow it also hurt us. The assessment itself in this sense does not rise. Therefore, the only circus for hooligans in the world is such an important thing in which energy is laid. Where the status that has given out life, it is called into question. Is everything so bad? And maybe be a bully, or maybe a person who changes these directions, scripts, rearranges life suitcases in other directions and something needs to be done with this? Therefore, we caught on this concept and, completely not blinking, we say to people - we are the only circus for hooligans in the world. If there is a second such circus, I will honestly set their paw.
Tamara Lyalenkova : The concept of "hooligan" in the Russian context is negative. There is mischief in this, some kind of challenge, risk. Probably for teenagers this is characteristic.
Masha, you did not only do such guys? You worked with children who studied at the gymnasium. These are clearly completely different children. Is there any difference in understanding, in the approach, in relation to yours and to these?
Maria Michelson : It seems to me that not. I began my acquaintance with the "Uppsala-Circus" with the same Russian museum. Somehow, such a project arose in our conversations - in the Russian Museum with children to find, what is the avant -garde as the art of free, violating all the rules, all laws. And try to speculate with them on this topic, and then create something with the circus.
As for children. I can’t say about the difference in approaches. In general, it is very difficult for me to talk about approaches, because for all children, and for adults, probably the most important thing is that they would be interested in this place that they would like to go somewhere. And here it is absolutely unimportant-we are talking about some elite gymnasium, or we are talking about a circus, or we are talking about some kind of sports story. If their eyes light up, if they are interested in, if they want to continue, if they have "I want to do something", then there is only one approach so that adults are interested in participating in this.
Tamara Lyalenkova : 16 years ago Why did the circus arise?
Larisa Afanasyeva : Firstly, this is an understandable method and tool. I think it will develop in Russia, and many people will use it in the right direction. But, in general, the first social circus was created in 1945 in Holland. It was a civilian initiative. I do not remember the name of this beautiful person. In the courtyard of children from poor families, he began to organize and create a project. This project still exists in Europe. Scientific works are written on this occasion. Circus pedagogy is investigated.
Therefore, 16 years ago, Astrid Shorn arrived in St. Petersburg, who already began to find out about this. She owned some tools. She saw that there were a lot of children on the street, and the children literally were 7 years old. And they lived on the street! And when she tried to make a theater with them, the theater did not go as an instrument. In this place, Astrid was tuned in the interest of the guys. She did not punch this wall, to fight about her. She realized that this tool is not interesting. Randomedly, she took out the balls for juggling and saw the right glare in children in her eyes - teach! Then she got a single -haired bicycle. It was very difficult to walk along Nevsky Prospekt with Astrid, because the entire marginal crowd of Nevsky Prospekt (pickpockets, prostitutes, drug addicts, street children) Astrid met just applause. She was with all of them on the right dialogue, without stuttering. It was respectful. This is such a real social worker with a tool in his hands.
Tamara Lyalenkova : Masha, but this tool worked like this for this audience? Or could he work for anyone?
Maria Michelson : It seems to me that this is the tool that works with both adults and children.
Tamara Lyalenkova : What is the magic of what? How did you yourself end up in the circus?
Larisa Afanasyeva : I have the magic of "UPSALA -CIR" - this small space, where in the small kingdom I put the turrets. The magic lies in the fact that we create our own world, where there are certain important things. If a child comes to us, we understand that we have a huge responsibility for his taste for the future. And therefore, in our understanding, the circus is not clowns in stupid noses, untold, not poodles, which are trained, but this is some kind of philosophy, aesthetics. We are talking about the Russian vanguard. We listen to beautiful music. We collect the best in the modern circus. We explore. Children experience incredible emotions! We give them the opportunity to be creative, beautiful, deep, sad, cheerful, etc.
"Uppsala-Circus" is not related to the circus. "Uppsala -Circus" is a unique phenomenon, first of all, for me. And, of course, this spreads on, like nuclear irradiation.
Tamara Lyalenkova : How do children come? How do they get?
Maria Michelson : Every year we conduct a new set of children in late September - in early October. We work with social centers. Children who come to us are children who study in correctional schools. These are wards of social centers. It can be guarded children. We are looking for children who have some difficulties somewhere.
Tamara Lyalenkova : So you are looking for? Or do they come to you?
Maria Michelson : Now we had an additional set of children with Down syndrome. All parents called and asked: "How to get to you? When do you have a selection?" And I repeat every day as a spell: "We have no selection. We are not a sports school! Everyone comes to us!" And then the natural process-someone remains, someone leaves for various reasons, someone is interested, someone is not very good.
Larisa Afanasyeva : We have no expectations from children. We do not treat them as thoroughbred horses, which should bring prizes and results. We are tuned to the process. And at some point miracles occur. At some point, a shift suddenly occurs. They tell us: "What are your beautiful children. They are casting?" No! They become beautiful! When the adult world makes expectations from the child, this is a large load, which is very difficult to cope with. She does not inspire you. She burns you. Therefore, this effect of butterflies in the "Uppsala-cycle" occurs. We did it unconsciously. We do not demand anything from them. We give them time.
Tamara Lyalenkova : But there is a very long way. This can take 5-10 years.
Larisa Afanasyeva : So it takes 5-10 years.
Maria Michelson : They often ask us a question - and the results? For some, the result-I learned to jump, and for someone the result, that he crawled out of the sofa. Everyone has very different results. We have no expectations. Each has its own individual story.
Larisa Afanasyeva : In the early 2000s, we had a very difficult relationship with one orphanage. And at some point they called me to the orphanage. The head teacher was very outraged by the behavior of children. I say: "What is your indignation? What are they doing?" And she says to me: "They look into my eyes and smile." Because before that they looked at the floor. They have wings, they have confidence. They became beautiful. The audience began to come to them for a performance. They looked up. This is a big claim - to raise your eyes and smile. This is a big challenge.
Tamara Lyalenkova : This is really a challenge! And your challenge, including some educational correctional institutions, is not all bad. There are people who devote life to this. Nevertheless, a difficult situation. How do you communicate with the staff? How do you help the children then? They have a completely different picture of the world. It is difficult for them at this age, in this state to correlate everything, to grieve what to do.
Larisa Afanasyeva : I'll tell you about the special school. Teenagers are not easy.
Tamara Lyalenkova : What are the special school?
Maria Michelson : We have a separate project.
Larisa Afanasyeva : This is a closed special school No. 1. The project is called "Circus behind the fence." We now stood the play "Point" with the guys. This is a documentary-cycle performance. On October 8, we will show it at the Street Art Museum. The guys will come from the Golden Mask in order to select or not take this performance. Relations with the school have been built for 6 years. We have built for a very long time, step by step. Because our task is not to cause good, not to come with banners and say that guys, we all know about good, we will tell you, and you will do as we think. I very often hear from social organizations that they do not go. This is so, but if our goal is to build work, it takes time. In this sense, we managed to achieve the following result with a closed school. We staged a performance inside the school. On the premier day, the gates of the school were opened. At the entrance, tickets for the performance were sold. And there were 500 spectators, including theatrical critics of St. Petersburg.
Maria Michelson : And, in general, no one is allowed into school.
Larisa Afanasyeva : This is a closed type of school.
Tamara Lyalenkova : I understand this very well. Therefore, I can’t even imagine how you managed to achieve it.
Larisa Afanasyeva : This is a security issue for everyone. We approached this performance for a very long time. We prepared ourselves, we prepared children. There is a documentary story in this performance - children talk about themselves, about what is happening to them, about how they relate to society. It is very often painful to hear the audience, it hurts to hear parents, it hurts to hear teachers, it hurts to pronounce these children. But this is some kind of very important thing that everyone needs. It takes time for this. We just took this time. We were in no hurry.
Tamara Lyalenkova : First you go through techniques, through some bodily things, that is, preparation in the hall?
Larisa Afanasyeva : Yes. For example, at first the guys were engaged in parkor. Relations are being built with coaches. Then we gradually began to take an interview from the guys. Then we began to take the guys to our circus. We cooked something together. But before that there were still 3 years of preparation! We talked with the administration that we did not come with the war. What you get is wonderful. Let's connect together, let's go to the result together. We did not contrast ourselves with the system. I would wish us this line to observe. Do not go into emotions, but to be diplomats and learn this.
Tamara Lyalenkova : Were there any discoveries in this project for you? Something unexpected happened?
Larisa Afanasyeva : It was the most difficult project. This project was not to substitute the guys. These guys really need success, but it should not be falsified. It must be real. The whole process was built quite difficult, because the guys inside the group have a hierarchy. She is logical. There are people who are the highest caste, medium caste and lower caste. And their contact together is sometimes impossible. And our task was to make this creative process. These guys hate any theater. They cannot be pushed into costumes of bunnies and mushrooms. It is impossible to put this theatrical bullshit on their brutality. This brutality had to be preserved. This was a big responsibility. This is again a question of taste, when creative processes begin to destroy childhood, nature. The project was difficult, but very interesting. Stunning boys. After the performance, they said: "Let's continue further!" Now we will have the next performance. If we say - what's next? For them, this is a tremendous experience.
Maria Michelson : The guys called in the summer. For them, this is also an act - to call the circus on the city phone: "Can Larisa? And when do we rehearse?" It is expensive from the guys who study at a closed school.
Tamara Lyalenkova : Masha, do you think, things related to culture can take such children in some way? What else can they respond to?
Maria Michelson : Everything that is interesting is triggered. Music works when they suddenly find for themselves some kind of music that they did not hear. It somehow clings. This gives them some incentive to listen to something further, ask. Clarifies cinema. Therefore, we try to show it to them too. Crazes what about them. The most important thing is when to yourself, about a person. When they are faced with the fact that this whole story is not some kind of theater, and this all speaks of themselves, this is important. And then you can already take everything that lies around. For example, the guys went to the Street Art Museum to try to draw graffiti. One of the boys drew great. They told him - do you want to try?
Larisa Afanasyeva : They did not just draw, they met with a professional artist who told them the philosophical context and the concept of "street art", art for people.
Tamara Lyalenkova : It seems to me that it is difficult with the group. Does something change after your classes inside the society in which they previously lived? Is this hierarchy somehow spreading? Or does everything remain as before?
Larisa Afanasyeva : spreads. Here at that moment it spreads. With the play "Point" we had a specific example. One boy was precisely because of his status, his hierarchy was not allowed into the group. And I had to talk with the guys and say that his story is important to us in the performance. They took him, but perceived him as an object. But after some time of interaction .... the circus is a bodily thing. And when they begin to do some support, this practice begins ... If Masha stands on my shoulders 10 times, my relationship with Masha, one way or another, will change in different directions. Sometimes I will love her for this, sometimes hate, but there will definitely be some kind of contact.
Maria Michelson : This is security, insurance, and support.
Larisa Afanasyeva : And at some point they begin to understand that if I can’t hold this little man, he will break his head. At the end of the project, it is clear that their relationships began to be built not “six” or not “six”, or you can do something or cannot. Someone can take it as a value, but someone-no. Here, too, do not expect from all the same result.
Tamara Lyalenkova : Did you understand something about them from the inside? How is these life arranged, what it looks like, what they are guided by, what are their values within the community in which they live? Is this such a near -tier story?
Larisa Afanasyeva : Yes. But the logic that is in it, it is absolutely created not because of cruelty and not because of stupidity. It is absolutely justified. I relate to this logic and this aggression ... This is protection, otherwise they will die. It is due, unfortunately, something. It is difficult to understand, but it must be understood. You can not destroy, you can not give this an assessment from the point of view of this is good or bad. You are a stranger in this system. You did not pass the circles of hell that these boys passed, being there.
Tamara Lyalenkova : Yes, there is an emotional background, of course, probably serious.
Larisa Afanasyeva : This story about lies is quickly read. You can not play adult games and call things with other names. They are older than their age because they saw a lot.
Tamara Lyalenkova : Aggression is characteristic and often. How is this translated into any physical formats using classes in the circus and is it translated?
Larisa Afanasyeva : Translated.
Each has its own story.
This is a whole story.
