The case of Varvara Karaulova

The Moscow District Military Court began to consider on the merits a criminal case against the student of Moscow State University Barbara Karaulova, who is accused of trying to join the Islamic State terrorist group prohibited in Russia. A student of the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University Barbara Karaulov (later changed the name to Alexander Ivanov) disappeared at the end of May 2015. In early June, she was detained while trying to cross the Turkish-Syrian border in a group of 13 Russians. Initially, she took place in the case as a witness, but after the interrogation and search in October was arrested. According to investigators, she maintained contact with representatives of the terrorist group. The defense insists that the student was not going to join the group and that she was deceived and used. Karaulova herself does not plead guilty.
