The first president of the country Mikhail Kovach died in Slovakia

In Bratislava at the age of 86, the first president of independent Slovakia Mikhail Kovach died, reports Reuters .

He held the post of head of state in five years - from 1993 to 1998.

Kovach died in the resuscitation department of the Bratislava hospital of St. Michael from heart failure.

Over the past year, the first president of Slovakia went to the hospital twice. He had heart problems, he was also diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Kovach was born on August 5, 1930. From 1989 to 1991 he served as Minister of Finance of the Slovak Republic. In 1992, he became chairman of the Federal Assembly of Czechoslovakia. After the division of the country, he took the presidency of the independent Slovak Republic.
