Russia has imposed a veto on the draft of the UN Security Council resolution of the situation in Syria proposed by France. It is reported by Reuters. The project suggested a complete cessation of flights over Aleppo and, accordingly, airstrikes in this city.

For the adoption of the Security Council of resolutions, support for 9 out of 15 countries included in it is required. The project was supported by 11 states. China and Angola abstained, while Russia and Venezuela voted against. However, due to the application of Moscow, the veto was not adopted by the veto.

As noted, this is the fifth time in more than five years of the Syrian War, when Russia vested the draft resolution on the situation in the Middle Eastern country. At the same time, the previous four times, unlike the current, the veto of Russia was also supported by China.

At a meeting on Saturday, a draft resolution was considered, proposed by the Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vitaliy Churkin. As noted, this document was actually an edited version of the introduced by France. The provision on the termination of attacks on Aleppo was excluded from there, and the emphasis is on compliance with the terms of the Russian-American agreement concluded a month ago.

The Russian project received only four votes in its support. In addition to Russia itself, China, Venezuela and Egypt voted for him. Angola and Uruguay abstained. The remaining nine members of the Security Council rejected the document. Thus, the Russian resolution was not adopted.

After Churkin was vested with the French project of the resolution, the British British Permanent Representative to the UN Matthew Rairect told him: "Because of your current actions, the Syrians will continue to die in Aleppo and beyond its borders from Russian and Syrian (produced by the dictator Bashar Assada. - Ed.) Bombing."

US Deputy Permanent Representative David Pressman, in turn, remarked: "Russia has become one of the main sponsors of terror in Aleppo. It uses tactics, rather appropriate gangs than governments." Moscow, the pressman added, "intends to allow the murders to continue, and actually takes part in their commission."

The French project was submitted to the UN Security Council on Friday. He, in particular, provided for the introduction of sanctions against the parties to the Syrian conflict for non -compliance with the stipulated conditions.

On the same day, US Secretary of State John Kerry said that Russia's actions in Syria in support of Assad’s regime should be investigated as possible war crimes. Kerry accused Moscow and Assad of purposeful intimidation of the civilian population of Aleppo and the destruction of anyone who is an obstacle to the implementation of their military tasks.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Commissar of the UN Human Rights Zeid Raad al-Hussein proposed limiting the permanent members of the Security Council in the use of Veto's right , "when there are serious suspicions that war crimes against humanity and genocide can be committed." The official associated such an initiative with the situation in Syria.

The deprivation of permanent members of the Council of Security of the Veto, the Supreme Commissioner noted, will allow this structure to appeal to the International Criminal Court in the Hague.
