In Chechnya, police killed eight suspected militants in a shootout

Around midnight, on the road between Nizhny Gerzel and Engel-Yurt, police tried to stop two cars, but they opened fire “with automatic weapons.” Grenades were also thrown towards the police. Both cars burned out. Four police officers were injured.

The department noted that according to preliminary information, the leader of the group was Ali Demilkhanov. He was on the federal wanted list.

The Investigative Committee in the republic opened a criminal case after a clash between police and militants under Articles 222 (illegal trafficking in weapons) and 317 (attack on the life of a law enforcement officer).

Earlier, in August 2015, an operation to detain Ali Demilkhanov was already reported . Then Demilkhanov opened fire and, wounding two police officers, fled. In 2012, the Caucasian Knot called Demilkhanov a “suicide bomber” and reported his death after a suicide bombing in Grozny.
