1936. Ivan Drach was born

80 years ago, on October 17, 1936, Ivan Fedorovich Drach, a Ukrainian writer and politician, founder of the folk rush of Ukraine, was born. In the 60s, he was connected with Ukrainian dissidents, but in 1966 he wrote an open letter in which he announced that he was repenting in his behavior.

In the late 1980s, Ivan Drach, along with Vyacheslav Chornovil, Mikhail Goryn and other prominent Ukrainian dissidents, created the People’s Ruh of Ukraine and was its chairman in 1989-1992. In 1995, he headed the Congress of the Ukrainian intelligentsia. According to the first president of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk, it was Drach who proposed to introduce the thesis on the neutral status of the country to the text of the draft declaration on the sovereignty of Ukraine.
