A rally was held in the largest closed city in Russia against production cuts at a chemical plant

Residents of Seversk (Tomsk region) held a rally demanding guarantees of maintaining production at the Siberian Chemical Plant, reports Interfax . The enterprise belongs to the Fuel Company – TVEL, which in turn is part of Rosatom.

The protesters do not believe the promises of the enterprise management.

“We were deceived so many times, the equipment worked for 50 years - there was no problem. Maybe TVEL will receive some benefit from the closure, but socially they will lose billions,” Viktor Tregub, one of the organizers of the rally, Seversk City Duma deputy, explained to the agency.

TVEL plans to transport gas centrifuges, which are needed for uranium enrichment, to the city of Zelenogorsk (Krasnoyarsk Territory). Workers at the plant in Seversk fear that after the equipment is transported, they may be left without work.

As a result of the meeting, a resolution addressed to Rosatom was adopted.

“In it we ask for guarantees of maintaining production at the Siberian Chemical Combine, to create a government commission to study the socio-economic situation in the city, and also to develop a plan for the development of the city and an employment program,” Tregub said. According to the organizers, 500 people took part in the rally, the Ministry of Internal Affairs says about 250.

In addition to uranium enrichment, the Siberian Chemical Combine also melts and processes plutonium. On October 3, Russia suspended implementation of the agreement with the United States on plutonium disposal.
