1916. The murder of Karl Styrgk

One hundred years ago, on October 21, 1916, Austrian Prime Minister Carl Carl Styrgk was shot dead by the leader of the Social Democrats Friedrich Adler in the restaurant of the Meissl & SCHADN hotel in Vienna in protest against Austria's participation in world war. Adler exclaimed: "Down with absolutism, we want peace!" He was sentenced to death, replaced by 18 years in prison. In the fall of 1918, a few days before the fall of the monarchy, Adler was pardoned by Emperor Charles I.
