1961 Explosion of the Tsar Bomba

55 years ago, on October 30, 1961, the USSR carried out a test explosion on the island of Novaya Zemlya, the most powerful 58-megaton hydrogen bomb in world history, unofficially called the Tsar Bomba. It was believed that such a bomb could completely destroy a large city or urban agglomeration. The seismic wave resulting from the explosion circled the globe three times. However, the Soviet Union could not practically use this weapon, since the Tu-95 bomber was not able to deliver the Tsar Bomba to the United States.
