On the morning of October 10, on the eve of a lecture by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrei Anatolyevich Zaliznyak on newly found birch bark letters, at the request of scientific journalist Natalia Demina, we were puzzled by the question of when this tradition began, and caught ourselves with the feeling that it had always been there. The question was forwarded to the lecturer himself, and it turned out that our feeling was partly correct. At first, these reports were given in classes at Viktor Markovich Zhivov’s seminar, but the participants themselves are no longer very confident about the exact date: either 1986 or 1987. It turns out that it’s already been thirty years (except with the inevitable omissions in the “lean” years, when there was not a single find during the season, but such years are few)…
