1721 Proclamation of Russia as an empire

295 years ago, on November 2, 1721, Russia was proclaimed an empire. To commemorate the victory over the Swedes, secured by the Treaty of Nystadt, Chancellor Gavriil Golovkin, on behalf of the Senate, the Synod and the generals, asked Tsar Peter to accept the titles of the Father of the Fatherland, the Great and the Emperor of All Russia - "as usual with the Roman Senate for the noble deeds of emperors, their such titles publicly given to them as a gift." Peter immediately agreed to accept all the listed titles.
