Roskomnadzor lifted claims to Microsoft for user data localization

Roskomnadzor lifted claims to the Russian unit of Microsoft Microsoft Rus on the localization of personal data of Russians in Russia, Interfax reports.

As stated in the message published on the website of Roskomnadzor, representatives of the department scheduled the Microsoft RUS for compliance with the requirements of Russian legislation in the field of personal data from March 1 to April 26 this year. Based on the results of this audit of the company, instructions were issued to eliminate the identified violations until October 26. The company provided a report on the work done on time.

"The report provided is an exhaustive from the point of view of the execution of the regulations of the supervisory authority. Additional unscheduled inspections for compliance with the company's requirements in the field of personal data are not required," said the head of the department, Alexander Zharov, adding that the issue of localization of Microsoft Rus is closed in Russian servers.

At the same time, representatives of Roskomnadzor and Microsoft refused to explain what the identified violations were. In addition, Microsoft does not disclose information about exactly where (at its own capacities or at the capacities of Russian partner companies) localizes the personal data of Russians.

Recall that the law on personal data, which entered into force on September 1, 2015, obliges Internet services to store and process personal data of Russians on servers located in Russia, and also store users' information for six months.

In mid -September, the head of Roskomnadzor said that by the end of the year the department intends to check about 600 company. At the same time, he noted that the Facebook social network and the Twitter microblog network are not included in the test plan for the current year, but the department is in the dialogue with them.

Currently, the most famous violator of the Law on Personal Data is the Linkedin business social network. On November 10, the Moscow City Court recognized the decision of the lower instance on Linkedin’s blocking, and at present Roskomnadzor is waiting for the motivating part of the court decision to introduce LinkedIn to the register of prohibited sites.
