The picture of Edward Munk "Girls on the Bridge" was sold from a hammer for $ 54.5 million

The picture of the famous Norwegian artist Edward Munk “Girls on the Bridge”, written in 1902, was sold at Sotheby's auction in New York for $ 54.5 million, according to the website of the auction house. The estimated value of the canvas was $ 50 million.

The "Girls on the Bridge" canvas was the second among the most expensive works of this artist sold at the auction. The cost record belongs to his famous film "Scream" (1893) - in 2012 she left the hammer at the auction of the Sotheby's auction house for $ 119.9 million.

"Girls on the bridge" belong to a series of paintings by Munk, which he began in the first half of 1900-X. The first of them is the version stored in the National Gallery Oslo. The earliest options for the picture were created around 1900-1901 in the city of Osgordstrand.

The artist made the first sketches to the picture from local schoolgirls who played on the bridge. In the first picture, the girls are depicted in a row with their backs to the artist, on other versions - they stand with their backs to the railing or depicted by a group in the center of the bridge. One of the options for the picture, painted by Munk specifically for the Parisian salon of independent 1903, was purchased by collector Mikhail Morozov and is currently stored in Pushkin's MiMI.

At the Sotheby's auction last Monday, Pablo Pacabaso Artist and Model (1960) was also sold - for $ 12.9 million at an estimated cost of $ 12-18 million.

The canvas of the Hungarian avant-garde player Laszlo Mojoye “Telephone Picture EM 1” (1923) left the hammer for $ 6.1 million, twice the estimated cost. The picture of the French artist Maurice de Vlaminka "Fruit Garden" (1905) was sold for $ 7.6 million.

As a result, the organizers of the auction, held on November 14, helped out a total of $ 157.7 million.
