The European Union at the level of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member countries (Coreper) previously approved the introduction of a visa-free regime for citizens of Ukraine. This is stated in a press release published on the Internet portal of the Council of the European Union.

At the same time, Coreper spoke in order for the liberalization of the visa regime with Ukraine to occur simultaneously with the entry into force of the new "temporary suspension mechanism" visa -free trips.

"The Committee of Permanent Representatives on behalf of the EU Council agreed on the position on negotiations (with the European Parliament and the European Commission. - Ed.) On visa liberalization for Ukraine. The Committee confirmed the proposal of the European Commission to provide visa -free entry for citizens of the EU during trips to Ukraine and for citizens of this country during traveling for up to 90 days during the 180 -day period," the report said.

The final decision should be approved by the European Parliament and the EU Council after the implementation of the Mezhin -Institutional negotiations.

In the context of the current migration situation, the European Union proposed to change the current mechanism of suspension of visa -free regime with individual countries. It is proposed to expand possible grounds for suspension and ensure a faster decision -making procedure. The discussion of the new mechanism of the European Parliament and the EU Council is still ongoing.

On March 21, 2014, Ukraine signed a political section of the Association Agreement with the European Union.

Five days later, at an expanded meeting of the Government of Ukraine with the participation of European politicians, the final package of legislative initiatives was adopted , necessary for the transition of Ukraine to the second stage of negotiations on visa -free regime.

In December 2015, the European Commission came to the conclusion that Ukraine has fulfilled all the criteria to exempt from the need to receive visas. On April 20, the commission published a proposal for the liberalization of the visa regime . "The commission pledged to introduce a visa -free regime for traveling for a short time to the European Union to citizens of Ukraine with biometric passports, since all target indicators established in the plan of actions for visa liberalization were carried out by the Ukrainian government," the document says.

On July 7, the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee recommended that a visa -free regime be provided to citizens of Ukraine, Georgia and Kosovo. For the provision of a visa -free regime to Ukraine, 42 deputies voted, 3 were against and 6 abstained. "Ukraine has taken a big step forward on the European path since the Euromaidan. Ukraine undoubtedly successfully fulfilled all the criteria necessary to provide a visa-free regime as soon as possible and without any further delay," said the speaker on Ukraine Jacob Sarius-Molsky.
