The European Parliament adopted a resolution on countering Russian media

Members of the European Parliament voted on Wednesday to adopt a resolution on counteracting the Russian media, the most dangerous of which are called the Sputnik agency and the RT television channel, RIA Novosti reports.

Of the 691 deputies who took part in the voting, 304 people voted in favor of the document, 179 voted against, 208 abstained.

The resolution titled “EU Strategic Communications as Counteracting Propaganda of Third Parties”, initiated by Polish MP Anna Fotyga, states that Russia allegedly provides financial support to opposition political parties and organizations in EU member states, uses the factor of bilateral interstate relations to divide members communities. The resolution names the Sputnik agency, the RT television channel, the Russkiy Mir Foundation and the federal agency Rossotrudnichestvo, which is subordinate to the Russian Foreign Ministry, as the main information threats to the European Union and its partners in Eastern Europe.

The document claims that Moscow is conducting "hostile propaganda" against the European Union. At the same time, the authors of the resolution equate Russia's opposition to the fight against the "Islamic State" (IS, the group is banned in Russia) and call on the European Commission and EU member states to additionally fund counter-propaganda projects. Earlier, the European portal EU Observer reported that for this purpose the EU working group on information counteraction against Russia could receive a budget of one million euros.
