“Both Boris Borisovich can show his“ Zerolines ”, and the group“ Polite Refusal ””

Last week, in the Moscow Planetarium, Megapolis presented his unusual project “Zerolines” , to the embodiment of which the musicians have been going on for more than 15 years. Before his St. Petersburg presentation (December 3 at Erarta), Colta.ru is happy to represent the official video for the composition “Biryuza” with the comments of the leader of the “megapolis” Oleg Nesterov and the artist Andrei goal.

- “Zerolines” is not an ordinary album, rather an art project. Why did Megapolis decide to abandon the traditional form?

- “Zerolines” immediately began to live an independent life and dictate their conditions. First of all, he did not go into his hands for a long time. For fifteen years we tried to approach him from different sides and were just able to. Rubbed. All these fifteen years we had the understanding that this is something separate from the "megalopolis", from our concerts. Everything is not so stems there, it develops. Not so come and doesn’t sound that. "Zerolines" is a stream that is painting everything around itself. In it, as in the light of a magic lantern, we change and the world around us changes. At a concert in the planetarium, I caught myself on the feeling that I began to see the world from the inside - in a deep sense, I became part of a common pattern.

This is really an art project. Perhaps this definition will seem arrogant or banal to someone, but I can’t find another. We once determined our other project “from the life of the planets” that its most complete version should sound from the theater scene and as part of the performance. So it is with “ Z Erolines” - it should sound in special spaces. The mission of this project is a slowdown, although any art slows down, setting us up one wave with the Absolute. “Zerolines” is a transformation into a stream where millennial musicians talk through us. This is a kind of ritual, and certain rituals require certain places. We have the right to show this project where it seems to us necessary to do this. The first time we played it in the planetarium, the second time - we will play in Erart on December 3 . The third time we will play it in the summer-at some open area or within the festival.

- How did you meet the artist Andrei Gate, who made the video to Zerolines ?

- Nike Borzov introduced us to Andrei. He said: I have a good artist, and he will make me an album. Andrei designed the album "Superman", then the single "horse". Then he began to work with us on “bullfinches” and draw up all our significant releases. I really liked working with him because I could get down to him.

About ten years ago , Mikhail Gabolaev and I showed Andrei Gate our secret project Zerolines . No one knew about him then - we opened a chest with diamonds, admired them and closed them again, unable to do anything. They offered him to create a video - Andrei began to dive and gradually made a video for each composition. The technology was like this: for some time we made a focus, Andrei tuned in, a stream came from him, I caught the necessary one, then we again brought a focus and did something accurate. Brian Ino calls this technique "Prepared accident." Many projects of Megapolis are a prepared accident. Since 1989, we have been playing Seychens with Mikhail Gabolaev - so songs and albums are born.

Each new video of Andrei brought us a new knowledge about us and about our project. His work inspired us very much. Then these videos were not the same as we see them now. Now it is h/b, grain, contrast and so on. And then it was a color and a detailed drawing. We were about to finish the project, but for some reason Mikhail and I were blown away and could not finish the matter. Then Andrei, of course, was offended by us. He made a video for a year, and at that time we got a revolutionary project, and we put it in the same chest.

Not so long ago, when I went into a forced creative link, starting to write the book “Heavenly Stockholm” at different points of the globe, the musicians of the “Megapolis” took the material “Zerolines” and began to pass this stream through themselves, become part of it. For a year we achieved a result. Then we again contacted Andrei Gate-during this time he worked with the Italians and Germans, first moved to Southeast Asia, then to Leipzig, where he lives now. And we brought the project to the end.

- Like the video of Andrei Gate, the composition "Zerolines" is very contrasting. Some of them sound a very fast and peppy rhythm, almost a Brazilian samba, but at the same time the text and music leave a feeling of condensed blackness.

- Yes, it becomes uneasy. Sometimes scares. At some point , I realized that the six compositions that we chose for Z Erolines are an eternal movement in a circle. “In Eastern Europe” is an immersion in a terrible fairy tale. “He is not here” is an alarm in its purest form. “Diamonds from the eyes” - with all the vigor of rhythm, is a loss. “Turquoise” is death. “There is” - this is a chat between earth and heaven, 40 days of wandering of a restless soul. And the "angels" is the hit of the soul where necessary. If you drew attention to the concert in the planetarium, a color appears in the “angels” in the video. This is a way out.

But without black there is no white. In order to feel the state of exit on the “angels”, you need to go through fears and anxiety at the beginning. How do you feel a happy finale if you did not worry the whole film? You can immediately show the final and disperse, but this will be nothing.

And about the rhythm I wanted to add that in the Zerolines project we went from the GRUV. He was a guide for us. The GRUV is the strongest of the allowed drugs, and these are not my words. In the book of Peter Hammille from Van Der Graaf Generator “Through music for yourself”, I read that the development of music on Earth can be divided into several periods.

How do you feel a happy finale if you did not worry the whole film?

At first there was the music of mystical consciousness - when, through the rhythm, through the Shamanian tambourines and African Tamtams, a man came to a stream that brought him to absolutely pure knowledge about the world. Revelations condescended to a person. Then, in ancient Greece and ancient India, the music of mythological consciousness appeared - a word was added to music. Then, in the era of the Renaissance, the music of mental consciousness appeared - this is all European classical music. And in the 20th century, the musicians realized that it was strange to abandon the incredible that was in the music of mystical and mythological consciousness. So integrated music appeared, which uses all the discoveries of mankind committed on this path, and it required an intuitive approach, so Shtokhausen and began its experiments. "Zerolines" may well be considered a representative of integral music.

- You called the “Zerolines” the prequel “superango” and “from the life of the planets”. Now it is clear that this is a separate project. Will Zerolines -2 appear?

- “ Z Erolines” is such a hashtag that can be suitable for any mature musician. Both Boris Borisovich can show his “ Z Erolines” , and the group “Polite Refusal”. I would like and dream that under the hashtag Zerolines would be a small festival about it. Where the one who dared to work with a prepared accident and intuitive music. This is not the “Leather Ball” movement, but something more delicate, but no less important (laughs) .

- During the concert in the planetarium, I thought that suddenly the “megapolis” was revealed as the most psychedelic group of Russia, like our Grateful Dead . It was hard to assume, listening to your early new -wave albums.

- We always had sprouts. Recall the compositions “High in the distance”, “Autumn-86” or opuses on “Thunderstorm in the village”. But in the 20th century, they were in the shadows of our postmodern experiments. They became more noticeable in the new century - to take a “loner” or “dedication to Denis Silku” with “superango”. Of course, I am madly glad that we finally won the title of "the most psychedelic group of Russia." Because secretly we wanted to go there. One example for us was the Talk Talk group, which began with the new wave hits, and in the end went to the astral. There were 25 of them in the studio, and they experimented not only with sound, but also with color and smell. They reached the Absolute. For me personally, they have always been an inspiring example. If you look at our albums through this lattice, it turns out that the “megapolis” has always been a psychedelic group, only before we tried to disguise it.

Fifteen years ago , Oleg and Misha invited me to the studio, put a couple of tracks from Z Erolines and offered to make a video of them. The compositions hooked me, I agreed, and we began to work, inspiring each other.

The musical philosophy of the project coincides with the visual. It goes from the stream, from improvisation. The video was made in the same way. It contains a large random factor, which forms a drawing - on the one hand, abstract, and on the other, with the readings read by the viewer of the association.

My work on the original version of the video for Z Erolines took a year and a half - video shooting, composition, graphics and so on. When years later it was decided to return to this project, the problem arose that then we had only ideas and considerations, now everything has changed. We already have another real, other air. I had to read this project again, so the visual series changed.

Fifteen years ago, Guta Muravyov, including Biryuza, took an active part in the project. Now in the filming of the "Diamonds" took part: Ulyana Video, Pascal Monteilhet , Maria Monteilhet and Marissa Lizares .
