French musician Didier Marouani, along with his representative, lawyer Igor Trunov, were detained in Moscow, TASS reports citing lawyer Lyudmila Aivar.
“Currently, the process of arrest is underway at Sberbank on Pokrovka Street, building 19. Maruani and Trunov were supposed to sign a settlement agreement there with the singer Philip Kirkorov, but the police were already expecting them,” said Aivar. She explained that she did not have information about the reasons for the detention, but was sure that the situation was planned by Kirkorov’s lawyer.
The Russian singer’s lawyer, Alexander Dobrovinsky , told Interfax that the detention of Trunov and Maruani was connected with Kirkorov’s statement of extortion of 1 million euros.
In November, a representative of Marouani accused Kirkorov of plagiarism. The statement of claim noted that the song “ Tough Love ” is a reworking of the composition Symphonic Space Dream , which was written by a French musician. To determine the presence of plagiarism, a musicological examination was carried out.
Maruani demanded compensation for damages from copyright infringement and payment of compensation in the amount of 75.34 million rubles. Trunov reported that Kirkorov, after three days of negotiations, acknowledged the claims of the Space leader and was ready to sign a settlement agreement.
On November 28, Kirkorov’s lawyer rejected information about a settlement agreement between Marouani and the Russian singer. “There was no copyright infringement, this was all invented to get money,” Alexander Dobrovinsky emphasized.
